Job Title: Technical Director (Middle School Shakespeare Production)
Job Type: Part-time, Seasonal
Schedule: Planning meetings, build days, tech week, four performances, designated rehearsals that will include student crew members. Planning will start by December 20th. Performances the weekend of March 7th.
Location: Alice Deal Middle School, Washington, DC
About the Role
We are seeking a Technical Director (TD) to oversee all technical elements of our middle school Shakespeare production. The TD manages sets, props, lighting, sound, and backstage operations while working with adult volunteers and student crew members. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys creating theatre magic in a supportive, educational environment.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Director to translate artistic ideas into safe, achievable technical plans.
- Oversee set construction, painting, prop organization, and scenic installation.
- Coordinate with parent volunteer teams; provide clear guidance and task assignments.
- Manage lighting and sound setup, cueing, and rehearsal adjustments.
- Train and supervise student backstage crew.
- Create run sheets, cue sheets, and transition plans.
- Attend all technical rehearsals and performances to ensure smooth operation.
- Troubleshoot technical issues calmly and efficiently.
- Ensure all tools, equipment, and backstage processes follow safety standards.
- Plan & manage set strike
Qualifications
- Experience in technical theatre (set, lighting, sound, props) in school, community, or professional settings.
- Ability to manage volunteers and teach students with varying skill levels.
- Strong organization, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Comfort with basic tools and school-level theatre equipment.
- Must pass required background checks.
