The General Services Department (GSD) supports the operations of state government by providing essential services, including procurement, risk management, facilities management, transportation services, and printing services. The Facilities Management Division (FMD) is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and renovation of state-owned buildings and facilities. FMD ensures that state workplaces are safe, functional, and sustainable, supporting the daily operations of government agencies across New Mexico.

Why does the job exist?
The Senior Plant Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation, maintenance, and monitoring of facility utility systems and mechanical equipment, including boilers, chillers, pumps, air handling units, and related controls. This position serves as the technical lead for lower-level operators, providing expertise in troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and system optimization to ensure compliance with all operational, safety, and environmental standards.
How does it get done?
Key responsibilities include:
- Operate, monitor, and maintain central plant equipment including boilers, chillers, air compressors, cooling towers, pumps, and water treatment systems.
- Conduct routine and emergency inspections of mechanical systems to ensure optimal performance and regulatory compliance.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, and control system issues; make or coordinate necessary repairs.
- Perform and oversee preventative maintenance tasks, ensuring accurate documentation in maintenance management systems.
- Adjust system controls to regulate flow, temperature, and pressure of utilities and building systems.
- Maintain logs of plant operations, readings, fuel and chemical usage, and maintenance performed.
- Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and other maintenance staff for specialized repairs or system upgrades.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA, EPA, and other applicable safety and environmental regulations.
- Respond to after-hours emergencies, alarms, and system failures as required.

Minimum Qualification
High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years construction experience to include familiarity with application of building codes and regulations, basic electrical, plumbing, ventilation, maintenance, and/or custodial operations; building trade experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current and valid New Mexico driver's license. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Physical stamina and strength are crucial for this profession. Heavy lifting, climbing, kneeling, and bending for extended periods. Must be able to lift 50 lbs., stand for extended periods of time, climb ladders, work in inclement weather (cold and hot). Must be able to carry tools and equipment from building to building on large campuses. Will be periodically "on call" for emergencies,
including weekends and holidays.
