Safety Specialist

AMERICAN is looking for a Safety Specialist that will coordinate various activities, such as chain reports, safety meetings, employee exposure to hazards, etc. They will help meet regulatory compliance by assisting in other safety-related functions, such as safety meetings, respirator fit testing, and routine office procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must exhibit a bachelor's degree in Environmental Health or safety-related curriculum from an accredited four-year college or university. Proof of degree required. A transcript or diploma would be acceptable and must be provided. OR Must exhibit a minimum of three (3) years of prior work experience in an environmental health or safety-related field.
- Must exhibit the ability to learn.
- Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Must exhibit good oral and written communication skills with all levels of the Company (i.e., good command of grammar and spelling). Must exhibit the ability to communicate in a courteous, polite, and effective manner, both verbally and in written format.
- Must exhibit the ability to work with confidential information and maintain confidentiality.
- Must exhibit the ability to understand and accurately use basic math involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, including fractions and decimals.
- Must exhibit a working knowledge in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
- Must exhibit the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the job duties.
- Due to the hazardous nature of the job environment (mobile equipment, overhead cranes, etc.), an acceptable level of vision and hearing is required in order to identify and respond to visual and audible warnings in a safe manner.
- Must be able to work extra hours on weekdays, weekends, and holidays as required to fulfill job duties.
- Must exhibit an excellent record of punctuality and attendance.
- Must exhibit good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with persons of different socio-economic, cultural, and educational backgrounds. Must exhibit the ability to cooperate well with other individuals and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Must exhibit a valid state issued driver's license.
- Must exhibit good reasoning and analytical skills for identifying and resolving problems.
- Must meet the physical requirements for safe operation of mobile equipment as administered by the Company.
- Must exhibit a tolerance for stress, the ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently, and meet deadlines under a dynamic work schedule. The nature of this job requires performing job duties with numerous interruptions.
- Must exhibit good attention to detail and good organizational skills.
- Must exhibit the ability to travel as required in order to perform the job duties and represent the Company when needed.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Exhibit an advanced degree in Occupational Safety and Health Management, Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or Engineering from an accredited college or university. Proof of degree required. A transcript or diploma would be acceptable and must be provided.
- Exhibit certification such as Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or other related certification in Environmental Health or Safety, or equivalent. Proof of certification required. A copy of the certificate must be provided for proof of achievement.
- Four or more years of experience in a health- or safety-related field.
