The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a full-time Research Scientist II. The Research Scientist must have experience in Stem Cells Research and iPSC differentiation into neurons, CRISPR technology, stem cell-based disease modeling, validation and assessment of cellular phenotypes, integrate splicing-aware transcriptomics, trans atomics, and proteomics in patient-derived neurons, data visualization, reporting, scientific writing, and must have an interest in neurodegenerative diseases.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The researcher's daily tasks involve performing experiments like cell culturing and genetic modification, analyzing and documenting data, maintaining detailed lab records, troubleshooting experimental issues, and reading scientific literature to stay current with advances. They will prepare research for publication, present findings at conferences, and manage lab equipment to contribute to understanding stem cell behavior and developing new regenerative therapies.
Experimental and Lab Work
- Cell Culture: Regularly feeding and maintaining stem cell lines, ensuring their sterility, growth, and viability.
- Experimentation: Designing and conducting experiments to study how stem cells grow, differentiate, and respond to various conditions or genetic modifications.
- Genetic Modification: Applying techniques like CRISPR gene editing to modify stem cells for specific research purposes.
- Microscopy and Imaging: Using advanced microscopes and imaging techniques to visualize cells and analyze cellular processes.
- Molecular Biology: Employing techniques such as PCR and DNA sequencing to study DNA, RNA, and protein components of cells.
- Troubleshooting: Identifying and resolving issues that arise with experimental protocols and procedures.
Data Analysis and Documentation
- Data Analysis: Interpreting experimental results using statistical methods and bioinformatics tools to draw conclusions.
- Record Keeping: Maintaining meticulous and accurate laboratory records and documenting all procedures and findings.
- Reporting: Preparing comprehensive reports and research papers to share findings with colleagues and the scientific community.
Collaboration and Professional Development
- Teamwork: Collaborating with other scientists, clinicians, and bioinformaticians from diverse fields to advance research projects.
- Literature Review: Regularly reviewing scientific literature to stay updated on new technologies and findings in stem cell biology.
- Presentations: Presenting research findings at scientific conferences and team meetings.
- Mentoring: Guiding and mentoring junior researchers and interns
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree and three years of professional research experience in an appropriate field or master's degree in an appropriate field may substitute for one year of experience, and Ph.D. in an appropriate field may substitute for an additional year of experience.
- 5-6 years of post-graduate experience in the stem cell field
Preferred Qualifications:
- An interest in neurodegenerative diseases
