Role Overview:

In Growth Engineering, our mission is to increase the number of transacting customers and grow their purchase frequency and lifetime value. We are the architects of core platforms and services that propel Coupang's growth and marketing efficiency. Our portfolio includes platforms for Search Advertising, Affiliate, Display targeting, CRM, Audience, and Push Marketing, along with core services for user profiles, landing, tracking, and attribution. The team has significant opportunities in machine learning for areas like targeting, personalization, and product recommendations.

As an Engineering Director, you will lead the architecture, development, and operationalization of a next-generation data platform, specifically the Marketing Data Platform. This platform is designed to process various data — online/real-time, near-real-time, and offline — with a focus on low-latency processing, efficient model training and reliable data serving. Your leadership will be crucial in transforming raw data into a robust data mart to enable high-performance machine learning model training and real-time online inference serving. This role directly contributes to advancing Coupang's data-driven capabilities by aligning technical innovation with strategic business objectives.

This role is based in Mountain View or Seoul, with a global team in US and Asia.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and mentor a team of talented engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.

• Define and execute the short and long-term architectural roadmaps for the data platform and services.

• Direct the design, development, and automation of large-scale, high-performance streaming data processing systems to drive business growth.

• Oversee the development of scalable data infrastructure and pipelines, ensuring they follow best-in-class software engineering practices.

• Collaborate with business and product teams to translate business requirements into architecture designs and execution roadmaps.

• Ensure the platform meets high standards of availability, reliability, and low-latency.

• Drive continuous improvement in the efficiency and flexibility of the data, platform, and services while maintaining high customer trust, performance, and availability.

• Lead the collaboration with data scientists, machine learning engineers, and other stakeholders to understand data needs and deliver effective solutions.

• Champion data quality and validation processes to ensure the accuracy and consistency of ingested data.

• Communicate with users, other technical teams, and senior management to gather requirements, describe software product features, and articulate technical designs and product strategy.

Basic Qualifications:

• 10+ years in software engineering domain, with a significant portion in a leadership capacity.

• 5+ years of experience in data-related products, with good understanding in data engineering technologies.

• Experience in designing, implementing, and maintaining distributed systems at scale.

• Demonstrated experience translating business needs to technical architecture and execution plans.

• Experience taking a leading role in building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers.

• A proven track record of influencing software engineering best practices.

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.

• Business-level English (written and spoken) is a must.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with internet-scale datasets and feature engineering, including feature pipeline and feature store development.

• Experience with open-source frameworks and technologies such as Spring, AWS, APIs, NoSQL, and Big Data Technologies like Kafka, Hive, Cassandra, Iceberg, Apache Flink, or Apache Spark.

• Strong leadership experience in a fast-paced, ambiguous, and agile environment.

• Ability to work backwards from the customer and deliver innovative, simple solutions.

• Ability to speak Chinese or Korean is a good plus

Pay & Benefits 

Our compensation reflects the cost of living across several US geographic markets. At Coupang, your base pay is one part of your total compensation.    

The base pay for this position ranges from $159,000/year in our lowest geographic market to $351,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on several factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
