Overview:
The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.
CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.
At CHAI, our people are our greatest asset, and none of this work would be possible without their talent, time, dedication and passion for our mission and values. We are a highly diverse team of enthusiastic individuals across 40 countries with a broad range of skill sets and life experiences. CHAI is deeply grounded in the countries we work in, with the majority of our staff based in program countries. Learn more about our exciting work:
CHAI is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and is committed to providing an environment of fairness, and mutual respect where all applicants have access to equal employment opportunities. CHAI values diversity and inclusion, and recognizes that our mission is best advanced by the leadership and contributions of people with diverse experience, backgrounds, and culture.
Team Overview
CHAI's Global Markets Team (GMT) is responsible for envisioning, executing, and monitoring market shaping interventions aimed at improving access to health commodities for low- and middle-income countries. These interventions range from traditional policy-led and grant-financed initiatives such as pooled procurement, coordinated ordering, strategic demand forecasting, and regulatory harmonization to more innovative credit enhancement mechanisms such as volume guarantees (VGs), advance market commitments (AMCs), and working capital facilities.
GMT collaborates closely with internal and external stakeholders to evaluate the public health impact of a proposed intervention and ensure alignment with current and future policy goals. GMT also works to build stronger relationships with manufacturers and distributors to devise and execute sustainable solutions for improved access to health commodities. For examples of the types of agreements CHAI helps negotiate, please see below:
- Innovative agreement launches affordable, optimal second-line HIV treatment in LMICs
- Breakthrough agreement will reduce costs and increase access to diagnostic technology for LMICs
- New high-quality antiretroviral therapy to be launched in South Africa, Kenya, and over 90 LMICs at reduced price
- Kenya is granted special Caffeine Citrate pricing after Clinton Health Access Initiative led negotiations with Ethypharm – Health Business
Position Overview
CHAI's Global Markets Team is seeking an Associate to support CHAI's supply side strategy across programmatic areas. The position will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to design and execute market analyses, including supplier landscaping, market sizing, demand forecasting, costing analysis, and impact modelling, and develop recommendations and investment cases for suppliers, donors, and country governments. The position may require domestic and international travel for supplier and partner meetings, as well as to CHAI program countries.
We are seeking a highly motivated, entrepreneurial individual with outstanding analytical capabilities, problem-solving ability and communication skills. The Associate must be able to function independently and have a strong commitment to excellence. CHAI places great value on relevant personal qualities: resourcefulness, humility, responsibility, tenacity, independence, energy, and work ethic. Through this role, the Associate will develop collaborative relationships with multiple teams within CHAI as well as with pharmaceutical suppliers and other key leaders within the SRMNH space.
This position is flexible to be based in relevant program countries, subject to country leadership approval and the availability of work authorization.
Responsibilities:
- Landscape and analyze supplier dynamics in low- and middle-income countries for priority products, including market share of suppliers, pricing, timelines for product development, regulatory approvals, and manufacturing, and suppliers' development and access strategies
- Develop demand forecasts and uptake models for new and existing technologies
- Execute costing and impact analysis for new models of financing, procurement, and distribution, including all-inclusive pricing, equipment leasing, pooled procurement, and tender optimization
- Develop market analytic frameworks, tools, and templates and serve as a market analytics resource across GMT projects
- Cultivate relationships with existing and potential manufacturers and distributors of priority products in low-and middle-income markets
- Perform company due diligence and develop business cases to support supplier negotiations and pricing agreements
- Prepare presentations, reports, and other analyses to inform global policy and increase the evidence base for high-impact interventions. Present findings of analyses to internal and external audiences
- Support business development efforts by contributing to proposal writing and donor engagement
- Stakeholder engagement, both internal and external, is quite critical to our role. We work hand in hand with WNH almost on a daily basis
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree and 3–4 years of relevant experience in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment (e.g., management consulting, public health, pharmaceuticals)
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative modeling skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, set priorities, and work independently
- Ability to drive forward assigned workstreams effectively (e.g., through thoughtful work planning, priority setting, stakeholder engagement, etc.)
- Ability to build collaborative relationship with internal and external stakeholders, including more senior-level individuals
- High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and PowerPoint
- Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time
Advantages
- Experience in global health, vector-borne diseases, or climate change adaptation
- Knowledge of market dynamics in low- and middle-income countries
- Familiarity with innovative financing mechanisms and public-private partnerships
- Experience working remotely with decentralized teams
- Additional language skills
