Position Summary

The Jr. Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Technician supports the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration and programming for electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, instrumentation, and related information systems. Working under the guidance of senior staff, this role ensures reliable and accurate operation of process measurement and control equipment while building technical skills for career advancement.

Key Responsibilities

System Support

  • Assist with the installation, wiring, and configuration of instrumentation and control devices.
  • Perform basic calibration and functional testing under supervision.
  • Support preventive maintenance activities to ensure system reliability.
  • Record and update equipment settings, test results, and calibration data.

Troubleshooting & Repairs

  • Assist in diagnosing faults in sensors, transmitters, control panels, and PLC systems.
  • Support corrective actions to restore equipment functionality.
  • Report equipment performance issues to senior staff for resolution.

Technical Documentation

  • Maintain accurate logs of service activities, test readings, and configuration changes.
  • Assist in updating instrumentation manuals and drawings.
  • Track parts, tools, and consumables inventory.

Compliance & Safety

  • Follow site safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, and applicable OSHA standards.
  • Assist in ensuring instrumentation systems meet quality and regulatory requirements.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with engineers, project managers, and senior technicians to meet project timelines.
  • Communicate status updates and escalate issues promptly.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • 2-Year College/Technical Degree in electronics or instrumentation, plus electrical certification, or company approved equivalent for IC&E level I (e.g. Military).
  • 0–2 years of relevant experience in instrumentation, controls, or industrial automation (internships or technical training acceptable).

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Be a self-starter and lifelong learner.
  • Able to think clearly and perform at optimal levels in high pressure situations
  • Basic understanding of electrical and instrumentation principles.
  • Familiarity with PLCs, SCADA systems, and process control equipment.
  • Able to run wiring, conduit, tubing.
  • Ability to interpret drawings both mechanical and electrical.
  • Working knowledge of ladder logic.
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams, P&IDs, and technical manuals.
  • Ability to safely apply lock-out tag-out process on owned equipment/systems or other equipment and/or systems when performing maintenance.
  • Knowledge of industrial network protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, Serial, EtherNet/IP, BACnet, Profibus preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

Certifications (preferred but not required)

  • OSHA 10 or 30 certification
  • ISA Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) Level I (or in progress)
  • First Aid/CPR

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to work in industrial plant or construction environments.
  • Frequent standing, walking, and climbing ladders.
  • May require lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Possible exposure to noise, dust, and temperature variations.
  • May require occasional overtime, evening, or weekend work.
