Basic Function

The incumbent, under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, performs a variety of maintenance activities on buses, trucks, and other vehicles as assigned. Duties include preventive maintenance, overhaul, troubleshooting, parts and inventory purchase and proper documentation of work activities.

Typical Duties

  1. Performs preventive maintenance and general repair work on buses, heavy duty trucks, emergency vehicles, and other vehicles as assigned, through inspection, adjustment and replacement of parts to ensure the effective functioning of the vehicle.
  2. Performs diagnostic problem-solving on buses, trucks, and other vehicles.
  3. Troubleshoot and repair electronic controls on engines and transmissions.
  4. Performs maintenance on electrical, transmission, suspension, body, air brakes and other related components.
  5. Install a variety of aftermarket systems and equipment to include but not limited to, vehicle camera systems, visual and audio emergency alert systems, etc. that may require body/chassis modifications/welding and metal fabrication.
  6. Performs repairs to vehicles in the field; safely rigs vehicles for towing and tows vehicles to Maintenance Center.
  7. Initiates equipment and parts orders for replacement.
  8. Maintains a safe and clean work area.
  9. Records and documents all work performed.
  10. Perform minor vehicle body repair and painting as necessary.
  11. Performs other tasks as assigned and provides backup for Light Duty Mechanic during absences.

Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Must have a valid Alaska CDL license or permit. Must have or be able to obtain a valid CDL driver's license with passenger and airbrake indorsement within 12 months of hire. Must meet insurance standards and maintain insurability under the Borough's insurance program. If personal automobile is used for Borough business, proof of automobile insurance at statutory limits must be provided. (A CURRENT COPY OF DRIVING RECORD WILL BE REQUIRED UPON REQUEST).

2. High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of five (5) years' previous experience in heavy duty equipment/vehicle maintenance and repair; two (2) years related vocational training may substitute for two (2) years of the experience requirement. Two (2) years of recent experience should be in a shop environment. Current ASE or equivalent certifications preferred.

3. Experience with diesel engines and automatic transmissions necessary. Prefer electronic repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting experience.

4. Experience repairing and maintaining buses and/or heavy duty trucks. Prefer maintenance and repair experience with fire apparatus and other emergency vehicles.

5. Experience maintaining heavy duty air brake systems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

1. Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and technology used in the repair and maintenance of buses, trucks, and other motorized vehicles.

2. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical trade.

3. Ability to read, comprehend, and apply technical instructions in repair manuals, manufacturers' specifications, and quality standards established by the Division.

4. Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions and interpret plans and sketches.

OTHER

1. This position requires a criminal background check.

2. Must provide and maintain hand tools for performance of maintenance activities.

Does not supervise; experiences minor problems daily and occasional minor ones that must be resolved on own initiative with little immediate supervision; the consequences of error, carelessness or mistaken judgement require significant effort to recover.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work having the most disagreeable extremes of heat, cold, noise, fumes, etc. which are continuous and expose the employee to combinations of elements and facts where there is major accident/hazard risk; up to 3/4 of time is spent standing, performs position in an abnormal sitting or standing position; requires crouching, stooping, stretching, bending and twisting; requires sustained periods of heavy lifting, pushing or pulling (50+ lbs.).

This position falls under the Borough's Blood Borne Pathogen (BBP) Exposure Control Program as it is reasonably anticipated that infrequent exposure to blood or other bodily fluids may occur while performing some job duties.
