The Domestic Abuse Council (DAC) is a mission driven non-profit organization dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic violence through emergency shelter, advocacy, and outreach. We provide a safe, healing environment for survivors and their children 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Reports To: Shelter Manager

Work Location: DAC Emergency Shelter

Schedule: Full-Time | Overnight Shift | 8-Hour Shift | Includes weekends and holidays as needed

Status: Essential Personnel (required to report during holidays and emergencies such as hurricanes or other critical events)

Compensation: From $17.50-$18.50 per hour

Work Mode: In-Person

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; education in social services or related field preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience in a shelter, crisis line, or residential care setting strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of domestic violence, trauma-informed care, and survivor empowerment.
  • Strong written communication skills with a high level of attention to detail for documentation and compliance.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and maintain a calm demeanor during crisis situations.
  • Bilingual (particularly Spanish) is a plus.

Position Summary:

The Overnight Residential Advocate is a key member of our shelter team, responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and supportive environment for survivors of domestic violence residing at DAC emergency shelter. This position requires a high level of independence, motivation, and attention to detail while being comfortable working independently during overnight hours. While providing crisis support and basic advocacy services, overnight staff also take the lead on shelter cleaning, room turnovers, and accurate documentation to support both resident services and agency compliance with Department of Children and Families (DCF) standards.

Core Responsibilities:

Advocacy & Support Services

  • Provide trauma-informed emotional support, crisis intervention, safety planning, and case management as needed during overnight hours.
  • Respond to hotline calls with professionalism and empathy, offering resources, referrals, and immediate assistance.
  • Welcome new residents during after-hours intakes, ensuring they feel safe and supported upon arrival.
  • Uphold a non-judgmental, empowerment-based approach in all interactions.

Shelter Maintenance & Upkeep

  • Serve as the primary staff responsible for shelter cleaning, organization, and sanitation during overnight shifts.
  • Perform nightly cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping, trash disposal, and restocking supplies.
  • Turn over and prepare resident rooms when participants move in or out, ensuring cleanliness and readiness.
  • Maintain and distribute necessities (e.g., food, clothing, bedding, other supplies) to residents while keeping track of inventory.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Accurately document all calls, services, financial assistance, and referrals provided during shift.
  • Maintain and review client files, ensuring documentation meets DAC and DCF compliance standards.
  • Conduct file checks to assist in compliance and preparation for regular agency audits.

Safety & Security

  • Conduct routine shelter checks to identify and resolve potential hazards or safety concerns.
  • De-escalate conflicts and respond to emergencies using appropriate non-violent crisis intervention techniques.
  • Follow all incident reporting procedures and document occurrences per agency protocol.

Compliance & Professional Development

  • Abide by all state-mandated and agency-specific protocols for reporting child abuse or critical incidents.
  • Complete required DCF Core Competency training and demonstrate ongoing compliance with training standards.
  • Participate in team meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities as needed.
  • Advocate for participants to access necessary services and reduce systemic barriers.
  • Maintain confidentiality while coordinating with external partners.
  • Perform other duties to support shelter operations and agency goals as assigned by leadership.
