YOUR PURPOSE
The Transit Maintenance Technician II plays an important role in keeping the City's transit fleet safe, reliable, and operating efficiently. This position performs skilled mechanical work on a variety of vehicles and equipment, including passenger buses, vans, and trucks. The work involves diagnosing problems, making repairs, and conducting preventive maintenance to support daily transit operations. Work is performed under the supervision of the Transit Maintenance Supervisor.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Diagnoses mechanical problems, determines required repair or replacement of parts and initiates repair on passenger vans, automobiles, trucks, passenger busses and other automotive equipment;
- Uses specialized electronic tools and computer to perform system checks on equipment;
- Performs selected repairs and replacement on diesel driven equipment;
- Repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition and fuel systems air conditioning systems, cooling systems and exhaust emission control systems;
- Replace transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies;
- Tunes motors using standard testing equipment;
- Takes down, and replaces air compressors, hydraulic systems, pumps and related equipment;
- Relines brakes;
- Lays out and fabricates parts;
- Services and repairs large motors and mowing equipment;
- May perform minor body and paint work;
- Performs diversified electrical work on automotive equipment such as trouble shooting electrical problems and repairing or replacing defective parts, repairing and adjusting lights, and replacing generators and starters;
- Inspects and certifies vehicles for compliance to state safety standards and N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles requirements;
- Changes tires and responds to road service calls as required;
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections on all vehicles and equipment;
- Repairs and helps maintain the buildings and facilities;
- Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have a valid North Carolina CDL Class B or greater Driver's License with a Passenger (P) endorsement or the ability to obtain one within six (6) months
- Must read, write, and speak the English language
- High School diploma or GED
- Must have prior experience as an Automotive Mechanic
- Must be able to maneuver and/or lift up to 200 pounds with help.
- Must have good knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of automotive passenger vans, automobiles, trucks, and passenger buses, and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery.
- Must have sufficient computer knowledge to use a laptop computer to diagnose electronic issues on engines, transmissions, and other systems on vehicles.
- Must have the ability to diagnose defects in drive trains, chassis, and other components of automotive equipment, detect by inspection any worn or broken automotive parts, and adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
- Must be able to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams, and installation and repair charts;
- Must have the ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to make reports;
- Must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
- Must be able to work with all types of people.
- Must be willing to educate themselves on the newer technologies.
- Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and early morning shifts on a regularly scheduled basis.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- ASE Certification
- Certified NC Safety Inspector
- Commercial Class B CDL with Passenger Endorsement
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Hearing/Speaking - Must be able to speak so others can hear when worker is out of their view, i.e. worker may be inside or under a vehicle, need assistance and call out to another employee. Must be able to hear others when they are out of worker's view. Worker often uses the two-way radio.
Visual Abilities – the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:
- Acuity, far – Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see vehicles moving in surrounding area. Both eyes 20/25 - R 20/30 - L 20/30 corrected.
- Acuity, near – Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see work aids close at hand so as to choose the correct tool and then work with it. Both eyes 20/22 corrected.
- Depth perception – Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Depth Perception - 4.
- Field of Vision – the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see wide span of area to detect moving vehicle when working in vicinity.
- Accommodation – Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly. This item is especially important when doing near-point work at varying distances from eye. Must be able to glance quickly from close work to distant object or vehicle and have eye lens adjust readily.
- Color Vision - Ability to identify and distinguish colors. To be able to distinguish colors is beneficial but not necessary.
Physical Strength – degree of physical demands typically associated with this position include:
- Heavy Work
Exerting up to 200 pounds of force frequently when moving and lifting tires; and/or Exerting up to 30 pounds of force frequently when lifting orders and supplies; and A negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling heavy items, and walking, standing, climbing, crawling, reaching, crouching, kneeling, bending and stooping. The use of arms, hands, legs, and feet is significant.

- Using Arithmetic: Ability to use arithmetic to the extent of measuring and adding fluids to equipment, documenting mileage and fluid consumption, and counting parts and supplies upon receipt.
Language Ability
- Read: Ability to read manual and/or manufacturer's instructions, directions, report and/or documentation information, order forms and other documents relating to the job.
- Write: Ability to write figures and make mileage and consumption reports.
- Speak: Ability to be conversant in voice and diction so as to participate in discussions with other employees and supervisors.
Environmental Conditions
Physical Surroundings
- The Worker is subject to Inside and Outside Environmental Conditions: Normally protected but sometimes exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. Employee is subject to all weather conditions including very hot and extremely cold, rain, wind and ice. The position is best suited for someone who doesn't mind getting wet, dirty, cold, hot and sweaty.
Hazards
- Employee will be exposed to trash, garbage, petroleum products, hazardous materials and chemicals associated with a fleet maintenance facility. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.

- Service truck, Personnel Resolution, motorized vehicles of various sizes, compressors, fuel pumps, drills, presses, grinders, micrometers, brake relining and drum grinding machines, welding equipment, various hoses, tires, valves, rings and bearings, radiators, batteries, carburetors, clutches, brakes, ignition and fuel systems, motors, diesel driven equipment, transmissions, axle assemblies, air conditioning systems, cooling systems, exhaust emission systems, lights, wipers, testing equipment, hydraulic systems, pumps, brake drums, large mowers, turf equipment, automotive electric equipment, generators, starters, hand tools, computers, gas, oil, and other fluids and equipment commonly used in a fleet maintenance facility.
