Manufacturing Quality Consultant

Valparaiso, Indiana, United States 180 Engineering Full time $120,000 - $180,000 per year

Manufacturing Quality Consultant

We are seeking a Manufacturing Quality Consultant for a 2-month contract that is hybrid in Valparaiso IN

Location:
Valparaiso, IN

Contract Length:
2 Months

Schedule:
Hybrid (first 1–2 weeks primarily onsite)

About the Role

A leading manufacturer of gas detection and environmental monitoring equipment is seeking a

Manufacturing Quality Consultant
who can energize teams, elevate quality culture, and drive practical, high-impact improvements on the production floor.

This is not a passive quality role. We need someone who brings enthusiasm, influence, and a people-first mindset—someone who can inspire teams to care deeply about quality and understand how it drives business success.

You'll review current quality processes, identify gaps, refresh procedures, and train employees on "what good looks like." Most importantly, you will help shift the organization toward a proactive, engaged, quality-focused culture.

Key Responsibilities

Quality Systems Assessment & Process Improvement

  • Review the existing Quality Management System (QMS) and identify clear, actionable opportunities for improvement.
  • Update, rewrite, and simplify key quality procedures (e.g., engineering changes, deviations, supplier corrective actions).
  • Improve traceability, documentation clarity, consistency, and alignment across engineering, manufacturing, and supplier activities.
  • Support the transition from heavy incoming inspection to
    supplier-owned quality
, ensuring the client provides appropriate specifications and change control.

This role will heavily touch the following quality domains:

  • Supplier Quality Management
  • Engineering Change Management
  • Manufacturing Process
  • Risk Management
  • Document Control
  • Nonconformance Management
  • Customer Feedback & Complaint Handling
  • Product & Process Traceability

Supplier Quality & Engineering Change Management

  • Strengthen supplier quality systems, including SCAR processes and quality accountability.
  • Reinforce "form, fit, function" expectations and ensure suppliers receive accurate specs and timely change notifications.
  • Help establish a robust Engineering Change Request (ECR) process to ensure accurate tracking and communication of part or design changes.

Manufacturing Process Optimization

  • Promote controlled, consistent manufacturing practices that enhance yield, measurement accuracy, and finished-product quality.
  • Support standardization, deviation management, and better-defined manufacturing workflows.
  • Recommend improvements and collaborate with the quality team to implement them.

Culture Change & Team Influence

  • Inspire staff at all levels to embrace quality as a shared responsibility, not a gatekeeper function.
  • Provide hands-on coaching and training to elevate awareness of quality principles and expectations.
  • Facilitate team engagement, encourage accountability, and create excitement around new processes and improvements.
  • Work closely with leadership and quality teams to ensure smooth handoff and long-term sustainability of new practices.

Expected Deliverables

  • Weekly updates to senior leadership.
  • A clear assessment summary outlining findings and recommended actions.
  • Updated or refreshed procedures related to supplier quality, engineering changes, and manufacturing processes.
  • Training sessions for quality, engineering, and manufacturing staff.
  • Support for month-one progress checkpoints and implementation reviews.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of manufacturing quality experience, including hands-on improvement of processes, documentation, and team engagement.
  • Deep experience with ISO 9001 quality systems, including auditing, maintaining compliance, and driving enhancements.
  • Proven leadership in implementing or overhauling a full quality system, with clear examples of measurable impact.
  • Strong project management skill set—able to plan, prioritize, communicate updates, and execute improvements within a short engagement window.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with experience coaching, training, and influencing cross-functional teams.

Proficiency in modern quality methodologies and tools, including:

  • Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • 8D problem solving
  • PFMEA
  • Lean manufacturing principles
  • Six Sigma tools and approaches
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and technical specifications, ensuring accurate communication with suppliers and internal teams.
  • High comfort interacting with production-floor staff, engineers, and senior leadership, with the ability to build rapport quickly.
  • Experience supporting supplier quality improvements, engineering change control, and manufacturing process stability is highly preferred.
