Job Description: This position is for Three 12 Hour Shifts in our Valparaiso office, with the possibility of other shifts in the same or other offices.

  • The Medical Assistant or Licensed Practical Nurse is essential during the patient visit with expectations to room the patient, acquire appropriate intake information, and give the report to the dermatologist/dermatology provider. This position also accompanies the dermatologist/dermatology provider in the room with the patient and scribes the information from the dermatologist/dermatology provider about the visit and enters it into the electronic health record. The medical assistant also prepares for procedures and assists as necessary. Other duties of the medical assistant may include: drawing blood, injections, suture removals, treating patients scheduled for nurse visits, sterilizing instruments, stocking exam rooms, and addressing phone notes and prior authorizations as needed while promoting a professional, friendly, and efficient environment for patients and staff.

Flexibility in the schedule is needed and it will be required at times to fill in at the Dyer, Crown Point, and Munster locations.

Essential Functions:

  • Rooms patients and documents all vital information prior to the exam with the dermatologist/dermatology provider.
  • Scribes information for the dermatologist/dermatology provider for the patient encounter.
  • Provides informed consent to patients prior to procedures and obtains photographs as instructed.
  • Under supervision, assists the dermatologist/dermatology provider with procedures such as biopsies – punch and shave, excisions, I&D, and Mohs micrographic skin cancer surgery.
  • Works under the supervision of the dermatologist to perform the following duties: Injections, and patch testing among additional treatments.
  • Provides post-op wound care and education to patients following procedures.
  • Continually learn and be able to explain new and existing dermatological conditions.
  • Maintains patient logs such as biopsy log and laboratory test log.
  • Schedules patient appointments following standard procedure and appointment templates
  • Assists patients with EHR patient portal registration.
  • Perform all other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Education:

  • Minimum Post High School education in a medical support field: Certified Medical Assistant

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • 1 year of recent experience in a medical office in a similar capacity is necessary and dermatology experience is preferred.
  • Must keep current on all state certifications, licenses, and/or registrations to continue employment.
  • Must attend mandatory meetings, including but not limited to, customer service and staff meetings.
  • Must be willing to travel to other clinic locations as needed.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Must possess excellent leadership, organizational, computer, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with staff, board, clients, and the public.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize appropriately, and work well both individually and as part of a team.
  • Ability to use time productively and contribute to high levels of company operational efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of information

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to position patients for examination and treatment
  • Ability to administer injections and draw labs safely while under the supervision of a provider
  • Ability to handle specimens safely and dispose of regulated biohazard material appropriately
  • Ability to transport laser equipment safely between treatment rooms.
  • Ability to stock and clean examination rooms.
  • Ability to efficiently operate all job-related office equipment (telephone, computer, calculator, fax, and copier).
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively via telephone and in person, in an active multi-office environment.
