The teams in this department work closely with surgeons, oncologists, internists, radiologists, and a critical care team to provide the highest quality care to our patients. Job Purpose: The purpose of the Veterinary Technician is to provide high quality medical support and nursing care to companion animal patients. The technician is routinely entrusted with patient assessments/triage, anesthesia, procedures, drug doses, and treatments. The technician will be responsible for patient care, patient follow-up, and maintenance of Cardiology department patient records.
The technician should enjoy working with diverse people and animals and be friendly and flexible in the face of varying expectations from clients and co-workers. The technician must share a firm belief in the quality of care we provide and communicate this sense of assurance to clients.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Technical Duties
- Proficient IV catheter placement
- Use and maintain IV pumps
- Understands and carries out written and oral directions
- Proficient and accurate drug calculations and administration
- Quality nursing and husbandry care of patients
- Strong working knowledge of veterinary procedures and pharmacology
- Perform in‐hospital lab testing and prepare specimens for outside labs, as needed when lab tech is not available. Report diagnostic testing results to veterinarians
- Perform and/or participate in all other diagnostics such as radiology, ultrasound, ECG, BP, glucose monitoring, Holter monitors, and temporary pacemaker implantation.
- Set up for thoracocentesis, abdominocentesis, pericardiocentesis for the DVM to perform.
- Assist veterinarians in outpatient exams by taking histories, vital signs and weights as well as providing client education
- Provide nursing care for in‐hospital patients including all DVM requested treatments, diagnostics, and medications
- Accurately and completely record all treatments
- Conduct pre‐admission exams and discharge hospitalized patients
- Perform client callbacks and patient updated as necessary
- Assist with technician appointments and the necessary tasks associated with them such as recheck labwork, valley fever titer, digoxin levels, recheck ECGs, and Holter placement
- Maintain legally defensible medical records in cooperation with veterinarians
- Prepping and assisting with ultrasound, endoscopy, thoracoscopy, fluoroscopy, bronchoscopy, and cystoscopy, including running anesthesia for these procedures
- Monitor anesthesia utilizing equipment such as pulse oximeter and electrocardiogram
- Prepare patients for anesthetic procedures, including pre-op medications, induction/intubation, and procedure set-up
- Keep accurate anesthesia/surgical medical records
- Monitor external laboratory samples from submission to completed results.
- Monitor worklist and diagnostic tab in EzyVet
- Effectively communicate treatment and costs to owners and collect signatures and/or verbal consent forms and treatment plans
Housekeeping Duties
- Maintain cleanliness of surgery suite, treatment area, and exams rooms for all surfaces, including lights, tables, cabinets, walls and floors
- Keep areas stocked with necessities
- Maintain equipment cleanliness and longevity by vacuuming pet hair from keyboards, wheels and equipment
- Clean cages, provide fresh bedding regularly and sanitize the cages between patients
- Discard sharps appropriately and exchange for empty containers when necessary
Administrative Duties
- Log controlled drugs
- Know how to use the inventory module in our veterinary practice‐management software
- Restock shelves and drawers in exam rooms and treatment area
- Follow OSHA requirements
- Follow practice's health and safety protocols
- Be proficient in using our veterinary practice‐management software (EzyVet, SmartFlow, Timeless)
- Assist Client Administrators as necessary
- Attending staff and individual meetings as scheduled
Client Services
- Answer incoming phone calls; respond with appropriate information; encourage patient exam/evaluation
- Greet incoming clients/patients; facilitate medical record paperwork/computer entry
- Create estimates for services as requested by the doctor
- Audit invoices daily to ensure charges are accurate and update owners with current charges
- Admit/discharge patients: ensure patients are ready for discharge, including discharge paperwork, medications to go home, and belongings collected
- Collaborate with pDVMs

Knowledge/Skills
- Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) license preferred
- Minimum of 2 years of technical experience
- Experience equivalent to job duties and responsibilities
- Excellent veterinary nursing and technical skills
- Excellent communication skills – written and verbal
- Strong computer skills
- Strong ability to multi‐task, delegate and oversee daily workflow
- Strong working knowledge of emergency veterinary medicine
- Strong work ethic and professionalism
Physical
- Able to properly restrain dog and cat patients for veterinary care and procedures
- Able to stand, sit, bend, restrain, squat for extended periods of time
- Able to function within a busy, stressful work environment in a mature, professional manner
- Able to lift 60 lbs. in a safe manner
- Able to type, write and verbally converse
- Able to work the posted schedule
Anticipated Schedule
Cardiology technicians will likely work four 10 hour shifts during the weekdays. Start dates will be staggered depending on availability for training.
