Job Title: ER Veterinary TechnicianJob Status: Full‐time or Part‐timeSupervisor: Department HeadARISE is a 24-hour veterinary emergency and critical care (AVECCC) and specialty hospital in Queen Creek, AZ. We have the most skilled doctors in the state and provide significantly complex treatments in the western US. The teams in this department work closely with surgeons, oncologists, internists, radiologists, and a critical care team to provide the highest quality care to our patients. The hospital provides an opportunity to work with state-of-the-art technology including, but not limited to, CT, MRI, and ultrasound. The Veterinary Technicians assist within the outpatient emergency department. All teams are under the direction of the doctor on staff. The doctor is the lead, and will be prioritizing patients, directing the team and is the ultimate decision maker for all medical treatments, while Shift Leads are the leads for managing the floor and its flow.Compensation: $20-29/hr (depending on experience)Schedule: Sunday-Tuesday or Thursday-Saturday (3/12s, full-time)Duties & Responsibilities:Technical DutiesProficient IV catheter placementUse and maintain IV pumpsUnderstands and carries out written and oral directionsProficient and accurate drug calculations and administrationQuality nursing and husbandry care of patientsStrong working knowledge of veterinary procedures and pharmacologyPerform in‐hospital lab testing and prepare specimens for outside labs, as needed when lab tech is not available. Report diagnostic testing results to veterinariansPerform and/or participate in all other diagnostics such as radiology, ultrasound, ECG, BP, and glucose monitoringAssist veterinarians in outpatient exams by taking histories, vital signs and weights as well as providing client educationProvide nursing care for in‐hospital patients including all DVM requested treatments, diagnostics, and medicationsAccurately and completely record all treatmentsConduct pre‐admission exams and discharge hospitalized patientsPerform client callbacks as necessaryMaintain legally defensible medical records in cooperation with veterinariansActively engages in RoundsRounds delivered/received at shift changes, anytime a staff member comes on shift or leaves a shiftRounds will be complete, detailed, and relative to patient & client careMonitor anesthesia utilizing equipment such as pulse oximeter and electrocardiogramPrepare patients for surgery including pre-op medications, induction/intubation, and surgery preparationsAssist veterinarian through surgery and monitor patients through anesthesia recoveryKeep accurate anesthesia/surgical medical recordsEffectively communicate treatment and costs to owners and collect signatures and/or verbal consent forms and treatment plansHousekeeping DutiesMaintain cleanliness of surgery suite, treatment area and exams rooms for all surfaces, including lights, tables, cabinets, walls and floorsKeep areas stocked with necessitiesMaintain equipment cleanliness and longevity by vacuuming pet hair from keyboards, wheels and equipmentClean cages, provide fresh bedding regularly and sanitize the cages between patientsDiscard sharps appropriately and exchange for empty containers when necessaryAdministrative DutiesLog controlled drugsKnow how to use the inventory module in our veterinary practice‐management softwareRestock shelves and drawers in exam rooms and treatment areaFollow OSHA requirementsFollow practice’s health and safety protocolsBe proficient in using our veterinary practice‐management software (EzyVet, SmartFlow, Timeless)Assist Client Administrators as necessaryAttending staff and individual meetings as scheduledClient ServicesAnswer incoming phone calls; respond with appropriate information; encourage patient exam/evaluationGreet incoming clients/patients; facilitate medical record paperwork/computer entryCreate estimates for services as requested by the doctorAdmit/discharge patientsCollaborate with pDVMsTeamworkParticipates in a positive manner in all group sizes.Refrains from participating in gossip‐leads by example.Supports team members by assisting other areas, is receptive to feedback and suggestions.Engages in active problem‐solving vs. Problem‐identifying.Makes suggestions related to client/patient service improvements and hospital efficiency.Knowledge/SkillsExperience equivalent to job duties and responsibilitiesExcellent veterinary nursing and technical skillsExcellent communication skills – written and verbalStrong computer skillsStrong ability to multi‐task, delegate and oversee daily workflowStrong working knowledge of emergency veterinary medicineStrong work ethic and professionalismPhysicalAble to properly restrain dog and cat patients for veterinary care and proceduresAble to stand, sit, bend, restrain, squat for extended periods of timeAble to function within a busy, stressful work environment in a mature, professional mannerAble to lift 60 lbs. in a safe mannerAble to type, write and verbally converseAnticipated ScheduleER Technicians will work three 12-hour shifts weekly, either a day or night shift but not a mixture.
