The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 – Pavement Marking to join our regional maintenance team in supporting safe and efficient travel across Washington's highways. This position will work with the Northwest Region specialized Sign crew on installation, fabrication, and repair of highway signs within the state transportation system. This position will also provide critical support to the Northwest Region (NWR) Striping and Pavement Marking crews throughout the year.
What to Expect
This position's typical schedule is 10-hour days, Monday-Thursday. This position may be expected to adjust work schedule based on business need, including nights, days, weekends and extended hours.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:
- Ability to install and remove highway signs.
- Ability to take inventory of signs and hardware.
- Ability to assemble, repair and install shoulder mount, structure mount, and overhead signs per standard plans.
- Plan traffic control for daily operations.
- Provide flagging for work zones.
- Operate Thermoplastic applicator.
- Train and mentor new employees.
- Install and maintain raised pavement marking and durable markings.
- Refresh striping throughout the NWR.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
- Equipment Operation & Maintenance
Demonstrated ability to safely operate and maintain light and heavy equipment used in roadway, excavation, agricultural, or similar maintenance environments. - Commercial Driving Proficiency
Ability to operate commercial vehicles requiring a Class A CDL, without air brake restrictions and Tanker endorsement (N). - Hand Tool Proficiency
Skilled in the safe and effective use of common hand tools such as shovels, posthole diggers, and pry bars for maintenance and repair tasks. - Power Tool Operation
Competent in operating power tools and equipment including drills, rivet guns, rotary hammers, blowers, jackhammers, and pavement grinders. - Communication Skills
Ability to convey information clearly and professionally through both verbal and written communication. - Digital & Data Entry Skills
Proficient in basic computer use, including data entry and accessing digital systems to support documentation and reporting. - Respect and Equity: Demonstrates the ability to contribute to a work environment that fosters respect, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all.
In addition to the above, the following are also required:
- Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Traffic Control Execution
Demonstrated ability to set up, manage, and remove traffic control systems in accordance with federal and state standards to ensure worker and public safety. - Pavement Marking Application
Skilled in the layout, preparation, and installation of pavement markings following WSDOT standard plans and specifications. - Guideline & Manual Compliance
Ability to perform traffic control activities consistent with WSDOT M54-44 and MUTCD requirements, ensuring proper placement, visibility, and operation of all devices. - Safety & Emergency Response
Ability to perform basic emergency response and first-aid actions consistent with CPR competencies.
Important Notes

- This position is not eligible for remote work.
- The salary range listed includes a 10% Group C assignment pay for HMW2 positions in the Shuksan area.
- Duties involve physical tasks outdoors in various weather conditions, including high winds, both day and night, often near high-speed traffic. Responsibilities include manual labor, machinery operation, and working in confined spaces. There is exposure to hazardous materials, chemicals, and environmental conditions, including hot asphalt and potential waste hazards.

- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
