This position will be responsible for the resolution of moderate to high complexity and moderate to high exposure claims which can be subject to disputes that must be resolved in mediation or litigation. The primary purpose of this job is to handle claims from coverage enquiry through legal liability assessment (where relevant) and quantum analysis, to timely and accurate resolution; ensuring mitigation of indemnity and expense exposure while communicating developments and outcomes as necessary to all internal and external stakeholders. The position will have increased responsibility for decision making within their authority and work with minimal oversight and will provide training and be a technical referral point for other team members.

  • Responsibilities:
    • Investigate, negotiate and settle moderate to complex first and third party watercraft damage claims
  • Analyze and confirm coverage of claims by reviewing policies and documents submitted in support of claims, as well as discussions with insureds, claimants and witnesses as needed.
  • Maintain and adhere to Markel's guidelines and procedures, as well as Fair Claims Practices regulations
  • Set reserves within authority or make claim recommendations concerning reserve changes to manager
  • Ensure proper adherence to internal large loss reporting requirements
  • Promptly communicate with Claims Manager on adverse case developments and provide information on pertinent issues affecting the lines of business
  • Communicate with underwriting as needed to manage claims and to alert of any significant developments
  • Participate in special projects or assists other team members as requested
  • Provide timely service throughout the life cycle of the claim by meeting all service level agreements, initiating timely contact to all appropriate parties, and responding to incoming inquiries according to company policy and procedures.
  • Utilize acceptable investigation claims handling and settlement techniques that achieve cost effective and timely closure results by obtaining, reviewing and analyzing documentation, policy provisions and other records
  • Participate in agent related functions and meetings as required

Requirements:

  • At least 7 years of watercraft or personal lines physical damage claims handling, or equivalent combination of education and experience, required
  • Working knowledge and understanding of basic principles of maritime law, including salvage
  • Sound comprehension of marine coverage and vessel systems
  • College degree and/or professional designation preferred
  • Proven track record in Customer Service/Experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Experience in determining contractual obligations, coverage analysis, and investigations
  • Ability to direct and manage outside vendors, including surveyors and outside counsel
  • Ability to manage complex damage exposures, set loss and expense reserves and evaluate settlement values
  • Ability to proactively self-manage an active caseload
  • Ability to analyze and convey summations of complex issues, recognize alternative approaches, and develop action plans, both verbally and in written form
  • Travel required as necessary (10-15%)
  • Non-traditional work schedule may be required
  • Experience with other ocean marine coverages, including ocean cargo and/or bodily injury claims, preferred, but not required

Pay information:

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The salary for the position is $78,000 - $107,250 with a 15% bonus potential.
