Position Summary

A
Senior Engineer I (Mechanical or Chemical)

and
Senior Engineer II (Mechanical or Chemical)

will lead our efforts in delivering energy efficient and sustainable solutions to the complex energy challenges faced by our institutional, utility, and industrial clients.

This role requires exercising engineering judgment and executing detail-oriented mechanical engineering design tasks supporting projects in a consulting environment for the industrial, institutional, and utility sectors. This role also provides technical assistance and guidance as well as quality control/quality assurance reviews for junior level engineers and peers. Projects include steam turbine, steam and hot water boiler, power generation, combined heat and power, central chilled water and standby generation plants, campus-type utility distribution systems, industrial/process facilities, industrial HVAC, and more.

Responsibilities include leading a team of mechanical engineers assigned to projects as a task lead, being the Engineer of Record for mechanical discipline on projects, overseeing and training junior staff and designers, collaborating with professionals, other engineers, planners, and infrastructure authorities, and assisting with proposals and business development opportunities.

Education and Experience

Education:

Engineering degree of four years or more that is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (EAC/ABET) in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or closely related discipline.

Experience:

  • Senior Engineer I (Mechanical or Chemical): 5-8 years.
  • Senior Engineer II (Mechanical or Chemical): 7-12 years.

Knowledge:

Well-developed practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to execute and design tasks as assigned.

Licensure:

  • Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam.
  • Passing the Principals and Practice of Engineering (PE) Exam.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in at least one State having fulfilled all prerequisites and registrations.

Other:

OSHA 10-Hour Certification.

  • Lead a team of mechanical engineers when assigned to projects as a task lead. Responsible for the mechanical aspects of the project design and execution. This includes being the Engineer of Record for mechanical discipline on projects.
  • Coordinate, review and approve design plans, ensuring data integrity and work is compliant with all applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Oversee and train junior staff and designers in the preparation of mechanical designs and documentation, both locally and virtually.
  • Collaborate with professionals, other engineers, planners, and infrastructure authorities, as well as assisting with proposal and business development opportunities.
  • Remain current in latest mechanical or chemical engineering techniques and practices.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, specifications, and/or technical reports for energy systems and utilities projects, including power generation, steam, hot water, chilled water compressed air, etc.
  • Working with a multi-disciplined team of both junior and experienced Engineers and Designers to deliver detail-oriented mechanical engineering design projects.
  • Preparation and/or review of design calculations, technical documents, and drawings necessary for purchasing, manufacturing, and installation of mechanical systems.
  • Preparation and/or review of engineering reports and construction documents.
  • Evaluation of historical data for energy usage (flows, temperatures, pressures, energy, etc.) and generation using data-analysis tools such as histograms, data plots, etc. to capture larger datasets into east-to-read-and-interpret formats.
  • Size, select, and analyze equipment for energy system projects. Work with equipment vendors for obtaining equipment selections and develop technical specifications for use in purchasing equipment by Owners or Contractors. Equipment includes, but is not limited to boilers, deaerators, hot water generators, pumps, chillers, heat pumps, cooling towers, steam turbines, combustion turbines, engine generators, air compressors, fans, and more.
  • Preparation and/or review of technical specifications for mechanical, equipment, components, accessories, and materials based upon Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) MasterFormat.
  • Development and/or review of Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams, demolition plans, mechanical plans and sections, details, schedules, etc. for processes involved with energy system and utility projects.
  • Development and/or review of mechanical design of high energy piping systems, including conducting pipe stress analysis, design for thermal expansion compensation, selection of pipe supports and components, and coordination with structural engineers for the design of anchors.
  • Development and/or review of mechanical design for compressible and incompressible fluid systems, including modeling.
  • Perform inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, resources, building, infrastructure, usage, and mechanical systems to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or permits
  • Construction supervision, commissioning, and field supervision of mechanical equipment installation.
  • Specify system components or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design, performance specifications, or environmental regulations.
  • Development and/or review of estimated costs for design projects assigned and review of contractor submitted bids for projects being executed by clients.
  • Position requires periodic travel to client project sites and offices for business development, 3D scanning, field investigations, meetings, construction observation, etc.
