The Neuroscience Department seeks candidates to teach one section of NEUR 102: Introduction to Neuroscience II, Brain Basis of Behavior OR one section of NEUR 103: Neurodiversity, Equity, and Ethics. Job responsibilities: Instructors will teach two classes per week, each class lasting for one hour and forty-five minutes. Instructors will maintain a course website, update teaching materials, grade assignments using rubrics provided, and hold weekly in-person or remote office hours (one hour per week). Additionally, instructors will attend weekly planning meetings to coordinate between parallel sections taught on different days.
NEUR 102 is the second half of the introductory neuroscience sequence. Guided by a textbook, students will build upon their exposure to basic concepts in the first half, Introduction to Neuroscience I: Cells and Circuits. Topics in 102 include homeostasis, hunger, reproductive behavior, sleep, emotion, psychopathology, language, memory, and consciousness. Students complete regular quizzes, discussion posts, and exams. As a capstone project, students research and write a comprehensive literature review.
NEUR 103 fulfills students' Cultural Diversity requirement and draws on a variety of texts focusing on the social determinants of health. Course texts, activities, discussions, and assignments introduce students to the science and history of autism, topics in mental health and wellness, historical influences of eugenics and scientific racism, movements for neurodiversity and disability justice, and ethical issues related to human enhancement and neuroprosthetics.
Minimum qualifications:
A Master's degree or Ph.D. in Neuroscience or a related field (e.g. Biology, Psychology, Chemistry, Computer Science, or Engineering) is required; advanced ABD candidates will also be considered. The ideal candidate will demonstrate evidence of teaching experience and effectiveness at the university level and an understanding of and commitment to support the mission of the University. Experience with laboratory equipment, scientific writing, research mentorship, project management, and other forms of experience may be beneficial. The successful candidate must be committed to academic excellence and to fostering an environment in which faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and personal experiences are welcomed and can thrive.
