Job Description Summary:
The Education & Outreach team is currently hiring for multiple positions, start dates may vary.
The Education and Outreach (E&O) Representative fosters community connections to the outdoors. As a presence on the land, they welcome visitors; provide information and educational opportunities; monitor for safety; assist with emergencies; and encourage responsible recreation. They work at a variety of venues including the Chautauqua Ranger Cottage, community events and in classrooms, as well as on trails and at trailheads. This position specializes in initiating contacts with people in the Boulder community as well as those visiting from afar, helping to build understanding and deliver programs on OSMP's diverse ecosystems, our response to climate change, and how we manage the land. The E&O Representative also assists with recreation, youth, wellness, accessible and bilingual programming, keeping an eye out for barriers to accessing the outdoors and working to reduce them. Their efforts help advance OSMP Master Plan outcomes and strategies.
Job Description:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Conducts Community Education and Outreach
- Teaches education programs and provides outreach across the OSMP system at trailheads and along trails, in classrooms, at visitor centers, and at community events.
- Uses and tracks educational props and media including maps, brochures, animal mounts, web pages, video, and other educational aides.
- Transports and sets up educational displays.
- Interprets rules and regulations as well as information about the park system and natural resources; assures resource protection; and encourages the proper use and enjoyment of the land.
- Interacts with the public to increase awareness of park rules and regulations and acts as a community advocate; communicates with diverse community members, and represents the department at various public events.
- Conducts assigned responsibilities within the program to meet department goals and resolve problems.
- Works with volunteers.
- Provides excellent customer service. Able to remain friendly and outgoing for several hours in a row, even in uncomfortable situations, extreme weather conditions and with large groups of all ages.
- Coordinates with work groups across the department.
Ensures Safety & Responsibility
- Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents.
- Assists with emergency response and first aid. Reports accidents, injuries, and hazardous conditions to proper authorities. Responds appropriately to coordinate and assist with emergencies and other incidents, including closing trails and trailheads.
- Uses all proper safety equipment.
- Understands department's emergency, wildlife, lightning, air quality and fire procedures.
- Provides for personal and public safety in all tasks.

- Maintains records and writes reports of work performed and materials and equipment used. Understands department's communications procedures and protocols including emergencies. Documents relevant incidents.
Engagement
- Complies with all city and department policies; participates in professional trainings and development.
- Adheres to attendance and workplace uniform and attire policies.
- Uses Education and Outreach workgroup communication protocol.
- Shows Initiative. Identifies what needs to be done and does it before being asked or before the situation requires it. Completes work in a timely and consistent manner. Able to work independently handling a wide variety of tasks and providing support to others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse groups of people, including the ability to interact courteously with the public and land users.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends.
- Knowledge of and experience in customer service
- Knowledge of Front Range flora, fauna, and ecosystems.
- Skill and experience in customer service
- Valid Driver's License and ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.
- Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to communicate fluently in English and Spanish.
- Ability to demonstrate hiking and outdoor skills.
- Knowledge of and experience in leading nature hikes and classroom programs.
- Knowledge of and experience working with a land management agency.
- Knowledge of and experience working with emergency management and/or medical response.
- Bachelor's Degree in natural sciences, resource management, education, public lands, or similar field.
- Certified Interpretive Guide or National Association of Interpretation Certification
- Wilderness First Aid or Responder
- Previous experience working with OSMP.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Associate's degree or equivalent experience in natural sciences, resource management, education, public lands, or a similar field; or equivalent of four (4) years' experience in natural sciences, resource management, education, public lands, or a similar field may substitute for the educational requirement only.
- At least one (1) year of prior experience, interest, or education in a combination of the following: leading groups in outdoor settings, teaching or training, public lands, public communications, customer service, and/or natural resource management.
- First Aid and CPR/AED certifications or ability to obtain within three (3) months.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Physical and Mental Effort: Work may include extended periods of time viewing a computer video monitor and/or operating a keyboard. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions. Ability to rely on sense of sight and hearing to help determine the nature of an emergency and make operational decisions based upon those observations.Frequent sitting to perform designated office tasks as well as moving over uneven terrain in all weather conditions. Frequent bending, balancing, reaching overhead and below shoulder, and twisting to perform duties. Occasionally lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to fifty (30) pounds.
- Work Environment: Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment. Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises. Outdoor work includes exposure to outdoor weather conditions and hiking in steep/uneven terrain.
- Machines and Equipment Used: Frequently uses standard office equipment including personal computers, telephones, smart phones, and copy/fax machines.
