GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Director of Nursing is directly accountable for establishing and implementing standards of resident care within the facility on a 24-hour basis. He/She is responsible for the direct supervision and evaluation of all personnel providing direct resident care. He/She will organize and implement facility policies, procedures, and management systems, in conjunction with the Administrator. Under the direction of the Administrator, He/She will coordinate nursing services with the community agencies, physicians, families/residents, consultants, ancillary service providers, and other departments within the facility. He/She is responsible for nursing service compliance with the local, state, and federal regulations.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Prepare and co-manage the monthly QA Meeting (ie. Mapping infections, incident and accident management and presentation, restraint totals, QA assignments and meeting presentations).
  • Prepare and manage the monthly safety meetings, monitor the OSHA regulations and workman compensation, and assist the Department Managers with employee incidents and modified duty and keep the Administrator / HR Dept informed.
  • Prepare and manage the monthly Licensed Nursing Meeting. Meets with the Nursing staff on a regular basis to ensure understanding of facility policy and procedures and regulation. Is the Inservice Coordinator for the facility.

  • Maintain and monitor the staffing and PPD budgeted for Nursing. Inform the Administrator of staffing needs and registry usage prior to scheduling. Maintains the registry usage log and keeps the Administrator and CEO informed of both the PPD and registry usage.

  • Ensures adequate 24-hour nursing coverage in the facility each day. Reviews with the staffing coordinator. the nursing schedule on a daily./monthly basis.
  • Recruits, interviews, selects, hires, trains, schedules, supervises, and evaluations all nursing personnel on all shifts, delegating as necessary. Initiates (new hire paperwork) and collaborates with Human resources. To assure that all licensed nursing personnel files, nursing rates of pay must follow the current/approved wage scale unless authorized by the Administrator. This also includes counseling and recommending termination to the Administrator as necessary and maintains supporting documentation.
  • Maintain current document dates for all nursing staff (ie. CPR, Licenses, Certificates, fingerprints, TB/CXR). Notify the Administrator of any issues with non-compliance in relation to these documents.
  • Attend the weekly Nutritional Assessment Review Meeting and notify the Administrator of any issues regarding substantial weight loss or worsening of any pressure ulcers.

  • Supervise the licensed nursing staff by consistently following the personnel policies and in a universal manner. Maintain a strong role model presence.
  • Make facility rounds every day assessing the care of the patients, cleanliness, order and safety of the environment, equipment function, and any other observations and report any issues or concerns to the Administrator.
  • Assist with problem resolution and follow-up on resident or family concerns. Keep the Administrator informed of all issues and concerns.
  • Maintains good interpersonal relationships with patients and their families, nursing personnel, and allied professional services in the community.
  • Manage and participate in the staffing and on-call staffing. Communicate the staffing needs to the Administrator.
  • Notify the Administrator of any issues immediately. The communication between the DON and the Administrator must be open at all times. Also, whenever follow-up is necessary from given direction, please notify the Administrator of the results in a prompt and thorough manner.
  • Manage the Stand-up Meeting in the absence of the Administrator and delegate assignments as necessary.
  • Supervise and delegate the planning and direct delivery of nursing care, services, treatment procedures and other services that ensure each resident's needs are met and that the physician's orders are implemented.
  • Supervises and reviews the medication system for completeness of information, accuracy of transcription of physician's orders and adherence to discontinued medications.
  • Monitors, on a periodic basis, chart documentation to ensure compliance with State and Federal Regulations, as well as, legality factors.
  • Assists in the development of the care plan for individual residents including rehabilitative and restorative activities, instruction in self-help aids, and utilization of available therapeutic services (PT, OT, ST), promotes individual resident care as related to their physical, emotional, spiritual, psychological and social needs, and assure that the plan is reviewed and modified as necessary.
  • Assesses and provides input regarding medical supplies, equipment, medications
  • Is the immediate Supervisor of the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) and is responsible for her/his successful completion of assigned tasks.
  • Participates in the admission process with the Admissions Director (prescreening possible admissions) and discharge planning with the Social Service Director and Rehab.
  • Able to work flexible hours in an emergency situation.
  • Practices and adheres to Infection control police
  • Supports the positive culture to promote quality care and positive staff attitudes
  • Assumes the duties of the Administrator in her/his absence.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as directed by the Administrator.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: A current Ohio Professional License (RN) through the Arizona State Board of Nursing.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of two years supervisory experience. 2-5 years of Nursing experience. Long-term Care experience preferred.

PERSONAL QUALITIES: Ability to provide positive leadership and role model. Must have ability to organize work and the work of others. Must have verbal and written leadership qualities to work effectively with various levels of staff, residents, family members, and regulatory agencies. Ability to cope consistently in high emotional or stressful situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORKING CONDITIONS: Ability to perform office/clerical duties, use computer, sit, stand, bend, walk intermittently, ability to lift 20 pounds, push a wheelchair with a resident, transfer a resident with assist as needed upon assessment.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Administrative authority responsibility and accountability for the functions and activities of the nursing staff. Make administrative decisions in the absence of the Administrator.
