Purpose and Scope:
The Program Management Team Lead is responsible, either solely or in partnership with co-leads from other R&D functions, for leadership of cross-functional / matrix teams to deliver non-pipeline programs within R&D / R&D sub-programs aligned with broader company strategic programs – overseeing and directing planning (ensuring alignment with strategic / corporate objectives), execution, and delivery to time, cost and agreed scope. These programs / projects may be led independently or through oversight of others (direct reports or matrixed colleagues within RDPM).
The Program Management Team Lead will serve on the RDPM Leadership team – proactively engaging in departmental leadership and may also manage direct reports within the RD Program Management function – providing direction, motivation, coaching/training, monitoring performance and supporting personal development.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Leads program strategy and planning, clearly defining the scope and developing a strategic road map / high level plan that aligns with broader business objectives / stakeholders' requirements.
- Identifies potential risks / roadblocks and ensures that mitigation plans are enacted where possible to reduce / eliminate impact on the program.
- Provides advisory/consultative services to business partners as necessary to support planning, execution and value realization from non-pipeline programs including anticipation of business needs and generation of strategic program / project ideas to provide solutions.
- Ensure clear roles and accountabilities are established for the program together with scope and deliverables and modus operandi – i.e. 'charter' the team / program.
- Lead / Co-lead the program team - overseeing sub-ordinate project teams to ensure execution of the program to plan – clearly communicating goals and expectations and encouraging cross-functional collaboration.
- Employ program management approaches that are aligned with business expectations regarding ways of working e.g. Agile.
- Lead and co-ordinate Project / Program Managers assigned to manage projects within assigned programs.
- As necessary given resource requirements / constraints, assume the role of Program or Project Manager on one or more projects within assigned programs.
- As required, and in collaboration with line leaders, provide coaching to team members and provide development opportunities where possible that align with personal development plans.
- Manage stakeholders ensuring appropriate communication (including to executives) on progress and issues. Establish KPIs (as appropriate) and monitor/communicate performance appropriately.
- Manage Program costs – ensuring budget / forecasts are aligned with plans, spend is aligned with budget / forecast and resources are effectively planned for and deployed to deliver the program.
- Ensure delivery of key outcomes and successful transition to 'business as usual' through application/oversight of appropriate change management strategies / approaches and establishment and close oversight of transition plans / training to ensure value is maintained and enhanced within the receiving business function(s).
- Where allocated, manage 4-6 direct reports, leading successful recruitment, performance management, development planning, and retention of a high performing team. Effectively delegate responsibilities to achieve organizational goals and effectively develop and align individuals to their abilities / aspirations, while ensuring optimal oversight and supervision to ensure goals are achieved and appropriate growth in technical, leadership and team membership skills.
- Contribute effectively to leadership of the RD program Management Function as a member of the Leadership team – offering ideas and taking ownership / leadership of departmental activities aimed at enhancing effectiveness of the department and enhancing its impact within Astellas.
Qualifications
Required:
- BA/BS in related science or business field.
- Minimum 14 years in the pharmaceutical industry and/or management consulting group focused on R&D or clinical operations, with minimum 7 years in the drug development setting.
- Strong understanding of the global drug development process and business processes and procedures to ensure cross-functional connections and operational processes are appropriately and effectively developed and communicated across the organization.
- Strong leader with demonstrated ability to influence and gain alignment in cross-functional, multi-regional and matrix teams.
- Minimum 10 years of program / project management experience, preferable in a highly matrixed, multicultural global setting.
- Expertise in use of enterprise-wide pharmaceutical project management software solutions, including skills in critical path analysis.
- Expertise in establishing cross-functional standards in support of business operations systems, especially as they impact and influence multiple departments and levels of management.
- Strong knowledge of applications and/or tools utilized by industry, such as Enterprise project planning software, MS Project, Excel etc.
- Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills in English, with an ability to interact at all levels of personnel.
- Strong and effective strategic thinker and problem solver with high degree of emotional intelligence, with the ability to both recognize and anticipate problems.
- Ability to both recognize and anticipate problems. Possesses the ability to translate solutions into viable action plans at a global level that are effectively disseminated and implemented through cooperation of stakeholders.
- Minimum 5 years' experience of managing a team of project managers / consultants (for line management positions)
- May require up to 15% international travel.
Preferred:
Advanced degree (MA/MS/MBA, PharmD, PhD, or related degree) preferred.

Salary Range : $170,450 - $267,850 (Final compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to skills, experience and organizational equity considerations)
