Job Description Summary:
The Division for Student Affairs cultivates an inclusive community that supports connection, growth, and well-being for every student throughout their GW journey. The Assistant Director (AD), Residential Education at the Mount Vernon Campus is responsible for advancing the vision, mission, goals, and priorities of Campus Living and Residential Education (CLRE) at the George Washington University. This role is integral in leading and developing a residential experience that encourages student engagement and develops a supportive living and learning community at the Mount Vernon Campus (MVC), located three miles northwest of the Foggy Bottom Campus. The AD, in collaboration with the Assistant Dean for the Mount Vernon campus and other ADs, shares in managing and supervising full-time professional staff and indirect supervision of student staff. The AD provides guidance and oversight to residential neighborhoods, supporting in-hall staff in the development of a community environment and identity. Additionally, each AD is responsible for the direction of assigned functional areas within the department, often working with full-time professionals as a mentor or co-chairs. Functional assignments may be re-evaluated as needed. Responsibilities:
Mount Vernon Campus:
- Works closely with the Assistant Dean of the Mount Vernon campus to develop and implement goals and priorities unique to the campus needs and population.
- Lead daily operations and management of the residential experience, providing direction and support to MVC Community Coordinators and student staff during the academic year and summer.
- Collaborates with Mount Vernon Campus partners to create intentional, engaging, outcomes-based programming for a diverse student population residing on the Mount Vernon Campus, including campus traditions, living-learning communities, and other strategic initiatives.
Academic Initiatives:
- In collaboration with the Assistant Dean of the Mount Vernon campus, support existing Faculty-in-Residence programs, including faculty recruitment & selection, programming, and assessment.
- Develop, support, and refine living-learning communities on the Mount Vernon and Foggy Bottom campuses in partnership with Assistant Dean of the Mount Vernon campus, faculty, staff, and other university offices.
- Along with the Assistant Dean for MVC, liaise with Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs on academic programs that overlap within the undergraduate residential community.
- Coordinate budget and support all faculty in residence with performance metrics and program assessments.
Overall Responsibilities:
- Serve as a member of the departmental leadership team and assist in the development of policies, priorities, and decision-making for the achievement of departmental goals and objectives.
- Motivate, direct, supervise, and evaluate 2-5 full-time professional live-in staff members; provide indirect supervision to student staff.
- Closely collaborate with the MVC and CLRE teams to support campus programs and initiatives.
- Provide guidance and congruence for front line staff around University, Division for Student Affairs, and departmental priorities, from the integration into policies, procedures, outcomes, and projects.
- Support staff in understanding and implementing CLRE's outcomes-based learning strategy and Residential Curriculum.
- Provide response and support to families, students, and guests with elevated concerns about their residential experiences. Resolve issues at point of need, appropriately communicate and share to others including those who support in resolution and those impacted. ·
- Participate and facilitate intentional development efforts related to the needs of a diverse student and staff population.
- Oversee functional area and neighborhood budgets.
- Enforce and help develop university behavior policy and role model community standards. · Serve as part of a 24/7 rotating on call system as Administrator on Call to provide guidance to urgent residential needs, campus emergencies, or other incidents in the residence halls. Respond to scene for significant residential emergencies.
Perform other duties as assigned including support for Division for Student Affairs wide projects and initiatives including new student orientation, student success initiatives, and university events/traditions, as well as participating in and supporting special events and activities and representing unit/division at university-wide events. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 6 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 4 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Qualified candidates are required to live on campus as a condition of employment and may require weekend and after-hours work.

- Proven ability to navigate organizational change processes including conflict, change, and uncertainty
- Comprehensive commitment to customer service in all aspects of academic year and summer residential experiences
- Exceptional critical thinking, consensus building, emotional intelligence and problem-solving skills
- Active involvement in regional or national organizations
