Description of Work Unit
The Radiation Control Office exists to ensure that the use of radioactive material and radiation producing machines in the University teaching and research missions is in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations; to guard a safe environment for employees, students and the public; and to reduce the University's liability.
Position Summary
The Environmental Protection Intern will be responsible for supporting the Radiation Safety Program, the Laser Safety, and Magnetic Resonance Safety Programs. This includes working with current programs that are in place or are in development. The specialist must cooperatively and collaboratively work with Radiation Control Office Staff to manage activities and duties required for the implementation of all programs. The position will assist these programs by conducting independent laboratory evaluations, taking radioactive samples, running counting equipment, managing the transportation of radioactive wastes, and processing of wastes for final disposal.

Four (4) years of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position such as physical sciences.

Education and Experience:
A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in the physical sciences as related to the work assigned equal to four (4) years.

Train to perform inspections of laboratory spaces and records for proper security, acquisition, storage and disposal of radioactive material. This duty requires this position to recommend corrective actions and determine if compliance of State regulations and University policy have been satisfied. Train to perform radiation package pick-up and inspection of incoming radiation shipments and delivery of those shipments to campus laboratories. Train to perform waste pick-up, packaging, and processing within campus laboratories and the University's Regulated Materials Handling Facility. Provide regulatory compliance assistance in the transportation of radioactive and mixed waste generated by Colorado State University Principal Investigators. Correspond with campus users regarding inventory and radioactive waste related questions.

Train to calibrate, maintain, and coordinate the use of the radiation detection equipment including counting samples for radioactive contamination. Establish efficiencies for multiple isotopes on each system and ensure that all equipment produces viable and defendable data by maintaining quality controls. Evaluation of results requires a knowledge of which instrument to use relevant to the type of radiation and the theory of detection. Maintaining these instruments requires a knowledge of the same principles.

Project applications require this position to utilize the research being presented to them and apply appropriate safety controls based on operational procedures and the properties of the radioactive materials requested for use. This position will submit the completed application for review within the office and ultimately assign a reviewer through the University's Radiation Safety Committee.

Train with RCO personnel and learn to complete compliance reports involving inventories for ionizing producing machines and sealed sources. Track all inventory through inventory verification paperwork and office databases as well as report required inventory to the State of Colorado. Process inventory verification forms, training, dosimetry, and inspections in office databases. This duty requires this position to recommend corrective actions and determine if compliance of State regulations and University policy have been satisfied based on state inspection due dates, and information returned by Principal Investigators through inspection requests.
