Who will you be working with?
The Communication Engineering team for the Signaling & Systems business is committed to delivering industry leading Railway communication systems. Our team delivers systems that connect entire alignments and systems allowing train control, RF networks, platform services and back-office integration. Deliveries include network and system designs, material procurement, cabinet assemblies, factory & field testing, commissioning, integration and in service support. Supporting and interacting with customers through all phases of implementation to ensure functionality and compliance.

As a member of the Signaling & Systems Communication Engineering team, you will be responsible for engineering all aspects of Communication networks for Railway systems, focused on network engineering and the interfaces in to the many subsystem interfaces, with respect to fiber networks, rack designs, RF networks (VHF, UHF, LTE and 5G), platform designs (Public Address, Visual Message Signs, Closed Circuit Television, Emergency Telephone, etc.) and all associated network configurations. In this role, you will play a critical role within a team of other specialized Communication Engineers that will support the specific subsystems (RF, CCTV, PA, VMS, etc.). This position will report in to the Sr Manager of the Communication Engineering team and take direction on multiple projects to support the network requirements and delivery timelines. Support will be coordinated with other team members which work mostly remote across different time zones (EST, CST, MST and PST). Work will be coordinated through a Technical Project Manager for large or complex deliveries but may require this role to take on leadership roles at times to communicate progress, issues and projected completion dates.
What do we want to know about you?
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science or relevant technical degree
- Minimum of 4 years of Network experience.
- CCNA Certification or the Ability to obtain the certification within Nine (9) months of hire.
- Working technical knowledge of network and PC operating systems.
- Working technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols, and standards.
- Capable of designing Ethernet, TCP/IP, SONET, MPLS based large area network in a rail environment.
- Experience architecting, specifying, designing, testing, commissioning network systems.
- Capable of not only designing but also configuring various switches, routers etc.
- Must be able to troubleshoot lab-based networks and also networks in the field.
- Develop, implement and maintain policies, procedures and associated training plans for network resource administration, appropriate use, and disaster recovery.
- Monitor and test network performance and provide network performance statistics and reports.
- Must be able to rack and test equipment in a lab.
- Recommend, schedule, and perform network improvements, upgrades, and repairs.
- Manage and/or provide guidance to junior members of the team.
- Fluency in English.
- Excellent communication, technical, and presentation skills.
- Must be a self-starter; make things happen type of person.
- Must be a hands-on individual; must be able to do the work themselves and not just direct others.
We would love it if you had:
- Experience with rail network systems for train control.
- Strong preference for field experience + office design experience.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including creativity and curiosity with ability to effectively communicate and influence solution direction to both technical and non-technical audiences alike across all organizational levels. Flexibility to navigate cultural nuances and business practices and adapt strategies accordingly.

What will your typical day look like?
- Develop detailed communication network architectures for rail signaling, control systems, and passenger information systems.
- Select appropriate technologies (e.g., fiber optics, wireless, IP/MPLS) to meet performance, reliability, and safety requirements.
- Collaborate with Engineering teams both internally and externally for adjacent subsystems to understand network requirements, issues, solutions and status.
- Draft technical specifications, design drawings, and interface control documents.
- Review contract, proposals and design documents to ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., IEEE, AREMA, FRA).
- Maintain up-to-date documentation for all network components and configurations.
- Supporting 1-4 projects in a day in various levels depending on project needs and progress.
- Coordinate lab and field testing of communication systems including radios, interlockings, and centralized traffic control.
- Perform performance, integration and interoperability testing between subsystems (e.g., SCADA, PTC, CCTV, PA systems).
- Oversee or manage installation efforts of others for supporting subsystems.
- Troubleshoot issues during installation, testing, integration and commissioning phases.
- Attend daily/weekly/monthly coordination meetings with project managers, contractors, and transit agencies. Providing engineering status for project schedule updates.
- Design network monitoring strategies using SNMP, NMS platforms, and diagnostic tools.
- Analyze performance metrics and plan preventive maintenance schedules.
- Support lifecycle planning for hardware and software upgrades.
- Develop installation guides for Communication system devices and/or cabinets.
- Develop training documentation for Communication system devices and/or cabinets.
- Develop technical design documents for Communication subsystems (SCADA, CCTV, PA, VMS, Radio, etc.).
- Conduct risk assessments and contribute to safety certification processes.

- Performing field work in Railway environments. Will require safety training for Roadway Worker Protection and all associated PPE.
- Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like.
- Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces.
- Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
- Adjusting or moving objects up to 20 pounds in all directions.
- Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
- Operating machinery and/or power tools.
- Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.
