The VA San DiegoHealthcare System, Medicine Service, Cardiology Section, is seeking to hire a full-time EKG Tech (GS MIT).

Salary Range: $57,070-$74,196, including OT opportunities and full array of benefits.

GS-7 MIT (EKG Tech) functions at the full-performance level and is responsible for independently performing complex electrocardiograph and telemetry monitoring tasks. The incumbent will work with minimal supervision to provide advanced cardiac diagnostic and monitoring services for our nation's Veterans.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Performs cardiac monitoring for patients remotely using specialized telemetry Holter (Zio Patch,) .
  • Recognizes and reports life-threatening or other abnormal cardiac rhythms and promptly notifies appropriate clinical staff.
  • Performs 12-lead EKGs and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Performs advanced procedures such as Holter monitoring, stress testing, and pacemaker interrogations, based on the specific facility.
  • Troubleshoots common equipment issues and performs corrective measures to prevent delays in monitoring.
  • Mentors and trains lower-graded technicians and new staff on EKG and telemetry applications.
  • Reviews patient information and medical history to identify prior variances and related pathology.
  • Documents pertinent observations and completed procedures accurately in the electronic health record.
  • Promotes patient safety and follows established safety protocols and compliance procedures.

Requirements:

U.S. Citizenship: All applicants must be U.S. citizens.

English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in both spoken and written English.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Completion of a certified EKG Technician training program is desirable.

Experience: At least one year of specialized Hospital experience equivalent, which demonstrates knowledge of the equipment, standard tests, and procedures for identifying arrhythmias and other abnormalities.

Certifications: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is preferred.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of complex cardiac rhythms, including lethal arrhythmias.
  • Ability to troubleshoot common EKG/telemetry equipment problems.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
  • High attention to detail for recording and interpreting EKG data.
  • Physical ability to assist with patient positioning and transfer.
  • Background check: Subject to a background/security investigation.
