Job Summary:

The Draftsman creates and updates detailed technical drawings and 3D models used in the design, development, and production of automotive components. The incumbent collaborates closely with engineers, production teams, and quality personnel to ensure drawings meet performance, manufacturability, and compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, revise, and maintain 2D drawings and 3D CAD models for sheet metal parts, assemblies, and tooling.
  • Interpret engineering concepts, specifications, and sketches to produce accurate technical documentation.
  • Ensure all drawings meet industry standards (GD&T, ISO/ASME) and company-specific requirements.
  • Collaborate with design and manufacturing engineers to ensure drawings reflect optimal manufacturability and cost efficiency.
  • Support Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and maintain accurate version control of all drawing files.
  • Prepare detailed bill of materials (BOMs) and ensure alignment with ERP/MRP systems.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide technical input related to drawing accuracy and feasibility.
  • Communicate with suppliers or tooling vendors as needed to clarify drawing details or tolerances.
  • Assist in the creation of documentation such as assembly instructions, technical manuals, and production layout diagrams.
  • Monitor and enforce adherence to drafting standards and recommend process improvements.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Associate degree or diploma in Drafting, Mechanical Design, or a related technical field.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, Creo, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of GD&T, mechanical design principles, tolerances, and manufacturing methods (CNC laser cutting, stamping, sheet metal forming, injection molding, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and standards.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • 2–5 years of drafting experience in automotive, sheet metal fabrication, injection molding, or precision manufacturing preferred.
  • Experience working within PLM/PDM systems is a plus.

  • Frequent work in a non-climate-controlled production environment, with seasonal temperature extremes hot or cold
  • Considerable exposure to noise levels conducive to a manufacturing department or heavy equipment
