Position Duties
San José Mineta International Airport is proud to offer an exciting and unique opportunity in the position of Geographic Information Systems Specialist I/II for a team member who brings positive energy and is motivated to shape the future of the Airport. Under the direction of the Senior Geographic Information Systems Specialist (Sr. GISS), the position of Geographic Information Systems Specialist I/II (GISS I/II) performs an integral role as a member of the Planning & Development Division of the Airport Department. This position is a data-focused position that will be responsible for creating, managing, and ensuring the integrity of enterprise GIS datasets as well as providing ongoing support for Enterprise and Airport departmental GIS projects and applications. This position requires candidate with commitment to building and maintaining quality GIS data, strong cartographic design skills, good attention to detail and customer service.

The GISS I/II will perform work of moderate difficulty at the journey level in the utilization of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as they relate to Airport and Master Plan Projects. The GIS Program at the Airport is comprised of three distinct primary functions and often inter-twine with each other. These functions are CAD, GIS, and the Plan Repository. The GISS I/II position will serve as the back-up person for the Senior Geographic Systems Specialist and as such will be required to perform in all three areas.

Essential duties of a GISS I/II include, but may not be limited to the following:
• Produce, analyze, and present geographic information utilizing ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online/Portal, and/or related software.
• Create and maintain enterprise GIS datasets using standard spatial editing tools and versioning. Interpret resources such as assessor's maps, discrepancy reports, Council-approved ordinances and resolutions, memorandums, and third-party data sources to enter graphic and attribute data into GIS while maintaining data integrity.
• Perform quality assurance checks on GIS data.
• Produce high-quality print and web maps, demonstrating good design skills and sound cartographic principles.
• Use SQL queries to produce reports on data management work.
• Use ETL (extract, transform, and load), Model Builder, or scripting tools to design and create GIS processes.
• Develop workflows and documentation for various GIS tasks.
• Fulfill requests for GIS data, analysis, maps, or reports using appropriate GIS tools and following City protocol.
• Provide support for departmental GIS users, including workflow automation, data conversion, map production, training, analysis support, and troubleshooting issues.
• Conduct various train sessions for follow coworkers in the use of GIS tools and technologies as needed.

The final candidate's qualifications and experience shall determine the actual salary. In addition to the starting salary, employees in this classification shall also receive an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation pay, which is included in the range below.

Geographic Information Systems Specialist I salary range: $80,960.88 - $98,651.28

Geographic Information Systems Specialist II salary range: $98,913.36 -$120,534.96

Minimum Qualifications
Geographic Information Systems Specialist I

A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Geographic Information Systems, Engineering, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Mathematics, Physical Science, Geography, Urban Planning or closely related field. A GIS or GISP certificate from a certifying body acceptable to the City of San José is highly desirable.

Geographic Information Systems Specialist II

A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Geographic Information Systems, Engineering, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Mathematics, Physical Science, Geography, Urban Planning or closely related field AND one (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in computer programming, geographic information systems or transportation planning. A GIS or GISP certificate from a certifying body acceptable to the City of San José is highly desirable.

Acceptable Substitution

Geographic Information Systems Specialist II - Possession of a valid GIS or GISP certificate from a certifying body acceptable to the City of San José may be substituted for the one (1) year of experience in computer programming, geographic information systems or transportation planning.

Required Licensing (such as driver's license, certifications, etc.)

California Driver's License.
