Geographic Information Systems Coordinator performs the overall administration and operation of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for various county departments.

The Geographic Information Systems Coordinator is a management level class. Under general direction the GIS Coordinator is responsible for implementing and managing the GIS system within a department. GIS is implemented by working in concert with executive management to develop a strategic plan to effectively and efficiently use GIS resources and all its capabilities to assess departmental needs and provide public services. The GIS Coordinator provides supervisory support, technical expertise, and training to staff. They coordinate with local, state, national and international groups involved in GIS data sharing, in order to establish sharing procedures and integrate new data with existing sources and layers of data.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education, training, and/or experience, that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.

  1. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency, in geography, earth sciences, civil engineering, urban planning, information technology, computer science, or a closely related field,
    • OR, a college-level GIS certificate;
  2. AND, Two (2) years of experience as a Senior GIS Analyst or equivalent with the County of San Diego administering and operating GIS system software, to develop maps or other digital displays for land use or spatial analysis, one (1) year of which must have been at a lead or supervisory level;
    • OR, Five (5) years of full-time experience administering and operating a GIS system in a large organization, to develop maps or other digital displays used for land use or spatial analysis, one (1) year of which must have been at a lead or supervisory level.
Note: Additional years of experience as described above may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis; OR, completion of related coursework from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency may substitute for the experience requirement on a year-for-year basis.

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS

License

A valid California Class C driver's license is required at time of appointment or the ability to arrange transportation for field travel. Employees in this class may be required to use their own vehicle.
