The Academic Business Specialist assists the assigned college(s) with the administration and monitoring of the budget (including grants), and the effective execution of business, HR, and other administrative processes.

Position Responsibilities

Serves as Production Technical Supervisor for all Theatre Program main stage and Blackbox productions. Serves as Technical Coordinator for additional Theatre Department events scheduled and as needed; assists faculty with smaller classroom projects to provide advice on technical elements as needed.

Ensures safety in all Lyman Center production spaces when in use by the Theatre Department. Working collaboratively with the Director of Environmental Health and Safety, is responsible for instruction, adherence to, and enforcement of safety protocols established by the University Office of Environmental Health & Safety and for all OSHA regulations.

Supervises students, paid student workers, and University Assistants in the Scenic Design Laboratory and performance venues. Provides technical instruction to faculty and undergraduate students to realize safe executions of designs and ensure utilization of safe construction techniques. Identifies students requiring support and/or intervention to enhance the educational experience. As Scene Shop Supervisor is also responsible for maintenance and upgrades of the laboratory tools and equipment. Establishes and maintains contracts with vendors, guest designers, and theatre equipment/technology/software providers.

Develops and oversees budgetary processes to maintain fiscal compliance. Develops and implements build/load in schedules in collaboration with other production departments. Works with Scenic Designer to translate designs to the stage; creates, revises, and archives all technical/construction drawings. Oversees all Technical Rehearsals and Dress Rehearsals in order to ensure safety and scheduling. Supervises all backstage and technical crew during rehearsals and performances.

Acts as liaison between the Theatre Program and external entities regarding technical and scheduling needs. Similarly, acts as a liaison with Theatre student groups concerning usage of the production and performance spaces. Facilitates creative and innovative collaborations with faculty, student, and guest artist directors and designers.

Performs other duties related to those above which do not alter the basic level of responsibility of the position.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with emphasis in Technical Theatre. Four (4) years of professional technical production experience. Experience leading undergraduate student crews of varying skill levels. Proven ability as a carpenter and theatre technician with experience in rigging and utilizing stage automation equipment. Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and guest artists. Experience in budgeting and scheduling for theatre production. Aptitude with Microsoft Office programs, Vectorworks/AutoCAD. Proven organizational skills and ability to multitask.

Preferred Qualifications

M.F.A. in Technical Production. Two (2) years working in a university environment. Ability to teach rigging and advanced stagecraft techniques to undergraduate students. Up to date training certificates from OSHA, or ability to obtain a minimum of OSHA 10 certificate.
