Summary
Under limited supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in coordinating community outreach programs and activities; representing the County in transportation projects on tribal lands; performs related work as assigned.
Essential Job Functions
(Essential function, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)
- Works with the Tribal Government Relations Liaison to help coordinate the County's intergovernmental relations and transportation projects with Native American Tribes within Navajo County.
- Assists the Board of Supervisors, Elected Officials, and Department Directors with scheduling, hosting, and preparing for tribal meetings.
- May serve as the County representative on various projects, committees, meetings, and programs involving interaction with tribal jurisdictions, agencies, and groups.
- Develops and maintains community contacts.
- Informs the public on Tribal - Navajo County partnership opportunities.
- Supports the county in transportation issues on the Navajo, Hopi, and White Mountain Apache Reservations.
- Supports the county in transportation issues with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), White Mountain Apache Division of Transportation, Hopi Division of Transportation, and Navajo Division of Transportation.
- Prepares presentations, talking points, and reports for use by the Department Director, staff, and Board of Supervisors.
- Travels between County and Tribal sites for meetings and to assist with programs.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends to attend community meetings and events.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of Native American culture and governance.
- Knowledge of government-to-government relationships when working with Tribes.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of public administration.
- Skill in acting with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, Tribal organizations, and the public.
- Skill in analyzing the needs of the department and County, developing short and long-range plans.
- Skill in writing, speaking, and translating Navajo, Hopi, and/or Apache languages (PREFERRED).
- Skill in effectively communicating verbally and in writing.
- Skill in preparing public presentations.
- Skill in computer literacy
Desirable Qualifications
High School Diploma or G.E.D; AND two years' experience in intergovernmental program promotion, intergovernmental relations, or community outreach/education; previous experience in government setting preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience; AND a valid driver's license.
