TITLE: Language Acquisition Ed Tech III, Portuguese (0.8 FTE) - Ocean Ave Elementary
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Portland Public Schools is hiring a Portuguese speaker to support Portuguese-speaking students at Ocean Ave Elementary. At the direction of the Principal and with additional guidance from the Director of Elementary ESOL, the ideal candidate will assist teachers by performing a variety of tasks that promote student learning and well being. Duties involve working with students individually and in small groups assessing performance, reinforcing instruction, motivating learning, assisting with classroom management, and performing clerical and other non-instructional work.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to speak both Portuguese and English fluently; preferred candidates will also be able to communicate in Spanish, French, and/or Lingala
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, parents, or employees
- Ability to interact with staff, students, parents, and others in an open, friendly, business-like manner
- Approval as an Educational Technician III by the Maine Department of Education; in the alternative, Maine provisional or professional teacher certification
- Preference will be given to candidates with a college degree that includes nine credit hours related to an education field such as behavior management or classroom strategies, and to candidates who have at least one year of experience working with students in structured situations
- Candidates will be expected to:
- undergo a spoken and/or written assessment in partnership with team members in our Multilingual Center or
- provide proof of Advanced Low (or higher) proficiency on the ACTFL scale or
- take an approved assessment of oral/written proficiency and score at Advanced Low or higher on the ACTFL scale

ABOUT OCEAN:
We are proud to be Maine's first International Baccalaureate IB WORLD SCHOOL offering the Primary Years Program (IB PYP). The IB PYP inquiry-driven learning model was adopted by Ocean Ave School as part of its school-improvement long-range plan, after input from teachers, parents and administrators. We are working with full commitment to build the program into the fabric of the curriculum school-wide with the six concept-based trans-disciplinary Units of Inquiry at each grade level. In addition, we are exploring and practicing "internationally-minded" character traits across the school community with the IB Learner Profile and IB attitudes.
