Position Summary:
The Senior Academic Advisor serves as a critical member of the BA/MD Program team, providing holistic and highly personalized academic advisement to undergraduate students from their entry into the program through their transition to the UNM School of Medicine. This position requires an in-depth understanding of the unique needs of a high-achieving, diverse student population in a rigorous pre-medical curriculum.
Located within the Center for Academic Success, the Senior Academic Advisor offers proactive and developmentally appropriate guidance that supports student success, persistence, and professional development. In addition to student-facing responsibilities, the role includes administrative and programmatic support such as committee participation, data reporting, and contributions to program development initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
Academic Advisement and Student Support:
- Provide individualized, holistic advisement that extends beyond course planning to include academic, personal, and professional development support.
- Meet with each student at least once per semester (in addition to pre-registration advising) to review academic progress, update degree plans, discuss extracurricular and experiential learning opportunities (e.g., study abroad), and address any academic or personal concerns.
- Conduct detailed reviews of student records, including transcripts (transfer, AP, IB, and UNM credit), to ensure timely progress toward graduation and fulfillment of BA/MD and SOM prerequisites.
- Monitor mid-semester progress and final grades and assess student standing in relation to program requirements. Develop and implement individualized success plans for students on academic probation or in jeopardy of program release.
- Teach HMHV 2993 - a one credit hour workshop for first year cohort to orient to program policies, procedure, academic integrity, learning strategies growth, self-care resources, health education, etc. each semester.
- Participate actively in program committees and strategic planning discussions to enhance student retention, engagement, and academic success such as BA/MD Committee on Curriculum and Student Progress (CCSP), assessment committee and Eligibility & Professionalism subcommittee.
- Lead key student support programming, such as the Foundations of Science Learning Academy, BA/MD orientation, First Year Friday, the BA/MD Wellness Initiative, and weekly "program meeting time" delivering student support in the areas of academic support resources, undergraduate research, MCAT preparation and SOM admission eligibility.
- Assist with coordination and execution of BA/MD events, including BA/MD Olympics, Preview Day, A&S and SOM graduation ceremonies, and lectures (up to 10 events and 2-8 student meetings per academic year).
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of program publications and communications, including student handbooks, web content, newsletters, course flyers, and graduation programs.
- Compile, analyze, and report on student academic performance data (e.g., semester GPAs, MCAT scores, standardized testing trends) for internal and external program stakeholders.
- Develop and present evaluative reports and recommendations to support decision-making and continuous improvement of advising practices and student outcomes.
- Engage in ongoing training and in-service learning to stay current with university advising practices, academic policy changes, and evolving student needs.
- Occasionally work evening or weekend hours for student events and programming.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

- All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the US-UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Bachelor's degree; at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with undergraduate degree matriculation and monitoring student progress toward graduation.
- Demonstrated success supporting a diverse student population, including high-achieving and educationally disadvantaged students from both rural and urban settings.
- Familiarity with pre-medical advising, including course prerequisites for medical school admission and MCAT preparation.
- Experience compiling, analyzing, and presenting academic performance data.
- Proficiency in UNM systems and tools such as Banner, LoboWeb, MyReports, Student Hub, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong written communication skills demonstrated through targeted application materials.
