Mechanical Department Head - Engineering Consulting
Are you an experienced Mechanical Engineer with leadership experience and a passion for mentorship? We are seeking a Mechanical Department Head for a well-established engineering consulting firm located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This leadership role offers the opportunity to oversee a multidisciplinary team working on HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection system design across a variety of commercial and institutional projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to a team of mechanical designers and engineers.
  • Guide the design of HVAC, plumbing, and occasionally fire protection systems from concept through construction.
  • Collaborate closely with internal project managers and external stakeholders to ensure quality and timely project delivery.
  • Lead quality assurance reviews, coordinate design schedules, assign projects, and assist in staff development and performance reviews.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for mechanical systems on multiple active projects simultaneously.
  • Participate in client meetings and business development activities.
  • ssist with preparing technical specifications, energy modeling, and system evaluations.
  • Oversee construction administration, including shop drawing reviews and site observations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license is required.
  • 10-15 years of experience in mechanical system design and consulting.
  • Proficient in HVAC load calculations, equipment selection, and system layout.
  • Experience mentoring junior staff and managing project workflows.
  • Familiarity with codes, standards, and the permitting process.
  • Proficiency with Trane Trace 700, MS Office, and specifications software.
  • Working knowledge of Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD is preferred but not mandatory.

  • Broad understanding of hydronic systems, air-side systems, geothermal, heat pump systems, and temperature controls.
