Job Summary/Basic Function:

Specialist I

Under general direction and in accordance with accepted practices, uses independent judgment in performing a variety of duties and tasks related to the installation and maintenance of low-voltage communications cabling.

Specialist II

Under general direction and in accordance with accepted practices, uses independent judgment in performing a variety of duties and tasks related to the installation and maintenance of low-voltage communications cabling and other low voltage systems including access control, IP surveillance, and wired/wireless network hardware.

Minimum Qualifications

Specialist I:
A high school diploma or GED and six years (FT) of related work experience, OR two years of post-secondary education and four years of (FT) related work experience. Related work experience should include fiber optic, voice, and data cable, installation, maintenance, and record keeping in a commercial environment.

Specialist II:
A high school diploma or GED and seven years of (FT) related work experience OR, two years of postsecondary education and five years of (FT) related work experience. Related work experience should include fiber optic, voice, and data cable, installation, maintenance, and record keeping in a commercial environment. Fiber optic termination, splicing, and advanced troubleshooting and testing skills. Experience with access control and IP surveillance systems.

Both:
Must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the local and NEC code requirements regarding the cabling infrastructure installation process. Must be able to demonstrate an understanding of BICSI installation standards and best practices. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSURE REQUIRED*
Must possess a valid United States driver's license for at least one year and maintain eligibility to operate University motor vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications

Essential Functions and percent of time:

Specialist I
  • 50% Installation and termination of various types of low-voltage communications cabling including the appropriate supports and pathways as needed to complete a code and standards compliant system. Testing to ensure installation meets minimum established transmission line standards and characteristics. Complete job tickets to generate proper billing and cable inventory management.
  • 25% Assist with the installation of wired and wireless network hardware, access control system components, security cameras, and other peripherals. Assist with communications room buildouts and other communications and IT infrastructure related work.
  • 20% Complete assigned MAC (move, add, change) orders and trouble calls/tickets for customers, which includes testing/verification, repairs or replacement of faulty equipment and accurate cable plant and network port documentation.
  • 5% Other duties as assigned.
Specialist II
  • 50% Installation and termination of various types of low-voltage communications cabling including the appropriate supports and pathways as needed to complete a code and standards compliant system. Support the design and implementation of various network topologies. This includes selecting appropriate supports and pathways to establish a robust infrastructure. Testing to ensure installation meets minimum established transmission line standards and characteristics. Complete fiber optic terminations and splices and perform appropriate testing. Complete job tickets to generate proper billing and cable inventory management.
  • 25% Installation of wired and wireless network hardware, access control system components, security cameras, and other peripherals. Assist with communications room buildouts and other communications and IT infrastructure related work.
  • 20% Complete assigned MAC (move, add, change) orders and trouble calls/tickets for customers, which includes testing/verification, repairs or replacement of faulty equipment and accurate cable plant and network port documentation. Perform high-level troubleshooting and provide technical support for access control and IP surveillance systems. May involve diagnosing and resolving complex network issues, conducting root cause analysis, and implementing solutions to prevent recurrence.
  • 5% Other duties as assigned. Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members, sharing knowledge and best practices to help them develop their skills and expertise in the field.

Working Conditions

May be required to work weekends and nights when necessary and to carry paging or cellular equipment for normal business activities and after normal working hour's response. Routine lifting is required when transporting equipment and supplies from inventory to field site; must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. This position requires climbing stepladders for wiring and the occasional use of aerial equipment or ladders.
