Job Overview
Shriners Children's is seeking an internationally recognized, highly motivated and collaborative Director for a major multidisciplinary research institute that is to be established on the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta GA. Reporting to the Shriners Children's Vice President of Research, the Director of the Research Institute will recruit within a new stand-alone facility a critical mass of biomedical scientists and engineers, and actively participate in the planning and design of a new 150,000 sq ft facility. The Research Institute will be fully equipped with cutting-edge equipment and technologies to support wet and dry bench research activities. The Director will spearhead the Institute's mission to drive discoveries from laboratory bench-to-bedside to improve the quality of life of Shriners Children's patients. The Director will oversee the research programs of 50 MD/PhD level investigators and their teams, mentor institute investigators, students, clinical and research fellows as well as visiting clinician scientists. df

Responsibilities
- Lead the recruitment and development of 50 MD/PhD-level Principal Investigators and their teams with the goal of driving discoveries from bench-to-bedside in areas related to four clinical lines of service: Orthopedics, Burns, Cleft Lip & Palate and Neuromuscular disorders.
- Lead an integrated, multidisciplinary free-standing bench-to bedside research hub and will create a tight alignment with Shriners Children's patient care to improve the lives of our patients.
- Qualify for an adjunct appointment at the Georgia Institute of Technology and/or Emory University.
- Contribute significantly to building Shriners Children's as an international leader in pediatric research for tissue engineering, wound healing, gene therapy, biomedical engineering, movement science as well as genomics, data informatics and applications of artificial intelligence.
- Ensure that all institute investigators build innovative research programs, and maintain a track record of prestigious scientific/medical publications and research funding support from external agencies and foundations such as the NIH, ARPA-H, and major foundations.
- Facilitate research mentoring and education for Institute investigators, postdoctoral fellows and students, as well as clinical staff from across the Shriners Children's clinical sites.
- Establish and promote the visibility of the Institute as a showcase for the Shriners organization, the research community, medical and clinical staff, donors and the general public.
Required:
- M.D. or Ph.D. in a relevant biomedical field
- 10+ years of relevant experience in clinical biomedical research in one or more areas related to Orthopedics, Burns, Cleft Lip & Palate, Neuromuscular
- Demonstrated leadership skills with proven ability to direct and mentor teams of scientists and manage multi-disciplinary research teams, and complex programs
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically, direct strategy, draw sound conclusions, and communicate research results to the biomedical research community and Shriners Children's leadership
