Qualifications Requirements:
Minimum Education / Training / Licensure / Certifications:
- High School Graduate or GED
- Vocational Training.
- Current BLS certification.
- Completion of an accredited surgical technologist training program.
Minimum Experience:
- Three (3) years surgical technician experience in Inpatient and or Ambulatory Surgery Center
- Graduate of accredited surgical technology program
- Certified Surgical Technologist Certification with National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) OR
- Current Certified Surgical Technologist Certification with the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTA) OR
- Surgical Technician Certification (CST) within Six (6) months of hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to answer telephones courteously.
- Ability to maintain highly sensitive, confidential material.
- Ability to understand and follow complex instructions.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Knowledge of anatomy, pathophysiology, current treatment methods.
- Provides hospitable customer service.
- Skills to provide care appropriate to the ages of patient served.
- Well-developed verbal and written communication skills.
- Exposed to hazards of handling diseased organs and tissues.
- Exposed to hazardous anesthetic agents, body fluids and wastes.
- May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases.

Essential Functions
- Prepares the operating suite for surgical procedures by setting up table, instruments and supplies according to the type of cases. Assists in preparing suite for subsequent cases.
- Maintains aseptic techniques. Actively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
- Assists with transferring the patient to and/or from the operating room.
- Assists members of the surgical team with gowning and gloving.
- Performs instrument, needle, and sponge counts.
- Assists in the maintenance and care of the specimens as directed and in accordance with standard procedure.
- Applies surgical dressings.
- Washes and prepares patient for transport at the end of surgery.
- Removes instruments and supplies from the operating room at the conclusion of the procedure. Returns all equipment and supplies to designated locations. Reports broken or malfunctioning equipment.
- Decontaminates instruments, supplies, and equipment according to established policies and procedures.
- Orders and stocks unit supplies on an ongoing basis.
- Updates and maintains physician preference information cards.
- Performs clinical duties to include answering phones, taking messages, running errands, and pulling the following day's cases. Assists with the training and orientation of new employees, as requested.
- Understands and models Surgicare of Hawaii's mission, vision and values.
- Reviews department operations manual to ensure compliance and applicable Joint Commission standards, federal and state regulations, accepted Standards of Conduct and Corporate Compliance Program. Complies with all Surgicare of Hawaii's policies, procedures, employee handbook and Standards of Conduct.
- Promotes excellence in customer/patient relations with all encounters.
- Adheres to safety policies and maintains a clean and safe environment for patients and co-workers.
- Participates in departmental and organizational quality improvement efforts.
- Floats to other departments within the center as assigned or requested.
- Attends staff meeting/in-service training, as required.
- Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs. Current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
- Strive to provide continuous improvement.
- Financially responsible in the workplace.
