Education - Associates degree required; Bachelor in Nursing Degree preferred
Experience - Two (2) years of experience in public health nursing, maternal and child health nursing, or related community health programs.
Licenses & Certification - Current Registered Nurse license from Oklahoma Board of Nursing and CPR certification required.
Knowledge & Skills -
- Knowledge of maternal, infant, and child health nursing practices, principles, and theories.
- Knowledge of prenatal, postpartum, newborn, and pediatric health promotion and disease prevention.
- Ability to apply evidence-based practices in maternal and child health, including lactation support, family planning, and home visiting.
- Skill in conducting developmental screenings, perinatal assessments, and family-centered care planning.
- Ability to effectively educate and counsel individuals and groups on parenting, infant feeding, safety, and reproductive health.
- Knowledge of culturally appropriate communication strategies for diverse families and communities.
- Skill in public speaking and community education regarding maternal and child wellness.
- Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary and interagency care for families.
- Proficiency in electronic medical record documentation and data tracking.
- Knowledge of emergency preparedness as it relates to maternal and infant populations.
- Ability to manage multiple projects including planning, prioritization, and evaluation of outcomes.
- Knowledge of HIPAA, confidentiality, and privacy standards in handling family health information.
The Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Public Health Nurse provides culturally sensitive, evidence-based nursing services to promote the health and well-being of women, infants, children, and families within the Muscogee (Creek) Nation service area. The nurse delivers education, preventive care, home visiting, case management, and public health outreach aimed at reducing maternal and infant morbidity and mortality, improving birth outcomes, and strengthening family health across the lifespan.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a variety of settings: homes, schools, health centers, community centers, and agencies. Work involves vehicle operation in isolated rural areas, on unimproved roads and in heavily congested traffic areas. There is possible exposure to infectious communicable disease, potentially hazardous chemicals and biohazardous materials. Must be aware of all risks involved and be willing to take precautions as requested or required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work driving a vehicle in all types of weather and on all types of roads. Must physically be able to walk, climb, and go over rough terrain and up and down stairs at homes, schools or community facilities. Incumbent must be able to lift at least fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics in lifting, carrying, bending, stretching, etc. in the delivery of PHN services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Satisfactory job performance will be determined by successful execution of the following:
- Provide maternal and child health nursing services through home visits, clinic appointments, and community outreach.
- Conduct prenatal, postpartum, newborn, and child health assessments; identify health risks and coordinate appropriate follow-up care.
- Support breastfeeding through education, counseling, and referrals to lactation services.
- Conduct developmental screenings and early intervention referrals for infants and young children.
- Provide education and resources on family planning, reproductive health, safe sleep, immunizations, injury prevention, and nutrition.
- Collaborate with providers, case managers, and public health teams to promote positive birth outcomes and family well-being.
- Participate in child health and school-based health education programs, health fairs, and maternal wellness events.
- Track and follow up on maternal and child health indicators including prenatal care utilization, immunizations, and infant mortality reduction initiatives.
- Coordinate care with tribal, state, and federal programs (e.g., WIC, SoonerStart, Family Spirit, and Early Childhood programs).
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record system.
- Provide culturally appropriate education and advocacy for families during pregnancy and the early childhood period.
- Respond to public health emergencies, including maternal and infant health-related outbreaks or crises.
- Participate in quality improvement activities and program evaluation for maternal and child health services.
- Attend regular trainings and maintain competencies in maternal and child health best practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
