San Francisco, CA, United States Hinge Health Full time
About the Role

Hinge Health is a digital health company focused on providing innovative, evidence-based solutions for musculoskeletal (MSK) pain. Through a combination of wearable sensors, personalized exercise therapy, and virtual care, Hinge Health helps individuals manage and reduce chronic pain, improving their quality of life while lowering healthcare costs. The company partners with employers and health plans to offer these solutions at scale, improving overall employee health and productivity.

Our Brain Health initiatives focus on creating personalized, evidence-based mental wellness experiences that adapt to each member's psychological needs, emotional state, and therapeutic progress. This position is mission-critical for expanding Hinge Health's impact beyond physical therapy into comprehensive mind-body wellness, helping millions achieve better mental health outcomes through innovative AI-powered therapeutic interventions.

As the Staff Engineer for the Brain Health team, you will lead the technical architecture and development of innovative mental wellness solutions at Hinge Health. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team building agentic AI systems for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Process-Interpersonal Psychotherapy (PIPT) experiences, while also architecting a unified education service that delivers comprehensive mental health educational content to our members. As a Staff Engineer, you should be passionate about building high-quality software, have a deep understanding of AI systems, and be excited to work on complex challenges at scale.

We enjoy a continuous deployment DevOps culture, and take owner-operator pride in supporting our code in production. Our stack includes Go, gRPC, Temporal, AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, PostgreSQL, Redis, Node.js/TypeScript (NestJS), GraphQL, React, and React Native. Our workflow is trunk-based CI/CD, and our security/compliance posture is at the highest standards of healthcare, including HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2, and CCPA.

What You'll Accomplish
  • Build and iterate on next-generation therapeutic AI agents that deliver personalized CBT and PIPT interventions with clinically sound, empathetic user experiences.
  • Architect and scale a unified brain health education platform that personalizes content delivery, tracks progress, and adapts to therapeutic goals.
  • Define and guide the technical strategy for brain health initiatives in partnership with product, clinical, and engineering leadership.
  • Design scalable AI architectures for multi-session conversational therapy agents that maintain context, demonstrate emotional intelligence, and adjust interventions based on member progress.
  • Establish and evolve MLOps practices tailored to mental health AI, including model evaluation, therapeutic effectiveness monitoring, and safety guardrails.
  • Collaborate with clinical experts to ensure AI interventions align with evidence-based therapeutic protocols and drive measurable clinical outcomes.
  • Build strong cross-functional partnerships across content, clinical psychology, data science, and platform teams to deliver a cohesive brain health ecosystem.
  • Optimize system performance and maintain fault-tolerant, scalable infrastructure capable of supporting high-growth AI workloads, while continuously evaluating emerging technologies to improve the platform.
