Staff Software Engineer
We are looking for a highly experienced Staff Software Engineer (Backend-leaning) to join our dynamic Growth Engineering team. The team's mission is to expand integrations with hospital systems, health plans, and ecosystem partners to support new growth initiatives. As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll play a pivotal role in building scalable, high-impact backend solutions that will deliver life-changing treatments to millions, while also being able to effectively collaborate with and contribute to our frontend codebases when needed.
Staff engineers contribute to their team's success by building and extending secure, scalable services and exposing clear, well-tested APIs. They design and implement end-to-end solutions, profile their systems to stay ahead of scaling bottlenecks, and help maintain a high bar with thoughtful and constructive code reviews. Staff software engineers collaborate with teammates to tackle the hardest features in a sprint and deliver foundational architecture improvements in small, safe patches. The ideal candidate has deep backend expertise, is comfortable working in a cloud-native environment, and can partner closely with frontend engineers (and occasionally contribute directly) to deliver high-quality user experiences.
We enjoy a continuous deployment DevOps culture, and take owner-operator pride in supporting our code in production. Our production systems rely on React Native, React JS, Node.js, TypeScript, NestJS, GraphQL, Docker, Rails, AWS, Postgres, Redis, Apollo, and Redux. Our workflow is trunk-based CI/CD, and our security/compliance posture is at the highest standards of healthcare, including HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2, and CCPA.
What You'll Accomplish
- Design, build, and maintain scalable, event-driven backend systems using Python, TypeScript, Apache Kafka, Postgres, DynamoDB, and AWS.
- Take ownership in leading architectural discussions, proactively identifying challenges and proposing innovative solutions to complex engineering problems.
- Develop clean, maintainable backend services and APIs, with a strong focus on performance, reliability, and scalability.
- Collaborate closely with frontend engineers to define clear API contracts and, when needed, contribute to frontend implementation to ensure seamless end-to-end experiences.
- Ensure system observability using tools like Datadog and Sentry for monitoring, logging, and error tracking.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, senior engineers, and engineering leaders.
- Mentor junior engineers and promote a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.
- Champion best practices in software development, architecture, security, and system observability.
- Leverage AI tools to drive team-level efficiency, enhance code quality, and stay current with emerging trends in software engineering and system design.
We believe that remote work and in-person work have their own advantages and disadvantages, and we want to be able to leverage the best of both worlds. Employees in hybrid roles are required to be in the office 3 days per week, for the full 8 hours of a typical business day. The San Francisco office has a dog-friendly workplace program.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical degree
- 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with a proven track record of building scalable backend systems and microservices
- 4+ years of experience building event-driven systems
- 4+ years of experience with AWS services (e.g., EC2, Lambda, S3, RDS, DynamoDB) and cloud architecture
- Strong experience with backend technologies (e.g., Node.js/TypeScript, Python, relational and non-relational databases, messaging/streaming systems)
- Experience collaborating with or contributing to web or mobile frontends (e.g., understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and at least one modern frontend framework such as React, Vue.js, or Angular)
- Hands-on experience with generative AI tools to accelerate development workflows, improve code quality, and streamline debugging
- 5+ years of experience in TypeScript, NestJS, GraphQL, Node.js, relational and non-relational databases, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Redis
- Experience designing and evolving integration-heavy systems (e.g., with hospital systems, health plans, or other external partners)
- Experience with mobile or web frontend development (e.g., React Native, React) sufficient to meaningfully collaborate on end-to-end feature delivery
- Experience with observability tools such as Datadog (performance monitoring) and Sentry (error tracking)
- Strong understanding of system design principles, microservices architecture, and CI/CD pipelines
This position will have an annual salary, plus equity and benefits. Please note the annual salary range is a guideline, and individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies, and work location.
