Position Summary

Under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist performs a wide range of clinical and technical tasks to support safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care in the operating room.

Schedule

Full-Time | Night Shift | 36 Hours per Week
Rotating holidays required

Key Responsibilities

Equipment & Instrumentation Management

  • Ensures safe operation of designated equipment and instruments.
  • Inspects equipment prior to use; removes and labels malfunctioning items according to policy.
  • Communicates equipment concerns to the team leader or charge nurse.
  • Demonstrates proper handling of delicate instrumentation, with minimal breakage.
Supply & Inventory Support
  • Monitors and maintains appropriate PAR levels of supplies in the operating room.
  • Rotates stock, checks sterility dates, and helps prevent waste.
  • Supports maintenance of instrument trays and updates physician preference cards as needed.
  • Uses supplies responsibly and cost-effectively.
  • Functions effectively across multiple specialties.
Aseptic & Safe Care Environment
  • Establishes and maintains sterile fields using approved aseptic technique.
  • Identifies and reports any safety, sterility, or infection-control concerns.
Surgical Procedure Support
  • Prepares supplies, equipment, and instrumentation for procedures.
  • Reviews physician preference cards to ensure readiness.
  • Anticipates surgeon needs and follows direction regarding equipment use.
  • Performs sponge/sharp/instrument counts with the RN.
  • Handles surgical specimens according to policy.
  • Loads case carts and ensures proper care of instruments.
  • Immediately reports any concerns that may impact patient care.

  • Assists with orientation and education of new employees and students.
  • Displays professional, collaborative, and service-oriented behavior.
  • Adapts effectively to sudden changes or emergent situations.
  • Demonstrates initiative and supports unit goals and mission.

  • Completes required annual in-service and continuing education.
  • Participates in ongoing educational opportunities and reviews in-service updates.

  • Demonstrates understanding of developmental stages across age groups.

Surgical Technologist I
  • Associate of Science in Surgical Technology OR completion of a program accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education Association OR completion of a structured training program with a professional equivalent
  • AST Certification*
  • CPR - American Heart Association BLS
    * New hires require certification if they had no experience in a surgical facility prior to July 1, 2013.
Surgical Technologist II
  • Same education and certification requirements as Tech I
  • CPR - American Heart Association BLS
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience, with either:
    • 1 year of employment at BMC, or
    • 2 years of comparable experience and successful completion of competency requirements following orientation
      * New hires require certification if they had no experience in a surgical facility prior to July 1, 2013.
Surgical Technologist III
  • Same education and certification requirements as Tech I
  • CPR - American Heart Association BLS
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience, including at least 1 year of employment at Baystate Health
    * New hires require certification if they had no experience in a surgical facility prior to July 1, 2013.
