As a Blood Collection Specialist, you will play a vital role in our healthcare team by handling essential tasks that ensure the integrity and efficiency of blood specimen collection. Your duties will include:

  • Verifying test requisitions in collaboration with nursing staff to address any discrepancies.
  • Confirming patient identity to ensure accurate specimen collection.
  • Performing blood draws through venipunctures and fingersticks with precision.
  • Maintaining specimen integrity through strict aseptic techniques and departmental procedures.
  • Working closely with nursing personnel to collect therapeutic drug-monitoring samples at the correct times.
  • Tracking all collected specimens meticulously by initialling, dating, and timing collections, while keeping daily tallies of your efforts.
  • Monitoring glucose levels by conducting bedside tests, accurately recording and reporting findings.
  • Conducting bleeding-time tests and entering results into our systems, while promptly notifying pathologists of any irregular results.
  • Upholding quality results by adhering to department protocols and testing schedules, as well as logging quality-control results and addressing needed changes.
  • Contributing to a safe and healthy work environment by following all standards and legal regulations.
  • Resolving unusual test orders by effectively communicating with physicians, pathologists, and nursing stations, notifying supervisors when necessary.
  • Enhancing your professional knowledge through ongoing educational opportunities, professional publications, and engagement with relevant organizations.
  • Supporting the hospital community by upholding professional standards and compliance with all applicable policies and regulations.
  • Improving the reputation of the phlebotomy department by being proactive and exploring ways to add value to your work.
