Position Summary: We are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer with deep knowledge of protection, substation, and distribution engineering. The role requires expertise in advanced engineering principles, standards, codes, and practices to handle complex and unique assignments. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to apply diversified engineering knowledge to broad assignments and devise innovative solutions to challenging problems.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • 10+ years of experience in Transmission & Distribution engineering, including protection and substation design.
  • Experience with protection, substation, and/or distribution engineering in the electric utility industry or equivalent.
  • Proven experience in developing and reviewing protective relay settings for systems from 12kV to 765kV.
  • Experience leading short circuit studies and designing step distance and pilot protection schemes (44-100kV).
  • Knowledge of transmission system operations, one-line diagrams, relay AC/DC schematics, and digital logic design principles.
  • Familiarity with relay setting software (Client EnerVista UR Setup, SEL AcSELerator) and Computer-Aided Protection Engineering (CAPE, CYME, ASPEN, Blue Beam).
  • Knowledge of NERC PRC compliance (PRC-23, PRC-26, PRC-27).
  • Experience with Client, ABB, and SEL relays and setting Electromechanical and microprocessor relays.
  • Strong leadership experience, including training engineers in relay settings development and short circuit analysis.
Responsibilities:
  • Support capital program projects (DSP, TSP, SUB IR, DSERP, etc.).
  • Gather and evaluate transmission, sub-transmission, and distribution system data, including transformer and generator data.
  • Model systems using appropriate software tools (CAPE, ASPEN) and perform short circuit and protection coordination studies.
  • Prepare and issue relay settings for substations and field auto-reclosers.
  • Coordinate relay settings with neighboring utilities and balancing authorities.
  • Review and approve returned "as-left" relay settings files and collaborate with Test Technicians to make necessary adjustments.
  • Perform system studies and provide protection requirements for designs.
  • Provide support to Test Technicians and Operators.
  • Travel to project sites as required for field walks or testing.
Long-Term Expectations:
  • Provide QA support in reviewing protection deliverables (relay settings, logic diagrams, calculations).
  • Design protective relaying systems to ensure the safety and reliability of the grid.
  • Review and approve one-line, elementary, and logic diagrams.
  • Collaborate with substation, distribution, project, and apparatus engineers to support substation expansion, automation, and infrastructure replacement projects.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience developing logic diagrams, programming relay settings, and preparing documentation for Test Technicians for bulk-power (115-220 kV) transmission lines, bus, transformer, capacitor, and reactor banks.
  • Experience in sub-transmission substation automation, protective relay upgrades, and fuse/auto-recloser settings for distribution lines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Visio, and Project.
  • Strong project planning, decision-making, and results delivery skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, with a customer-focused approach.
