Job Purpose:
The Chief Academic Officer oversees the K-12 academic functions of Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School (PALCS), including Elementary School (grades K-5), Middle School (grades 6-8), High School (grades 9-12), the University Scholars Program for accelerated learners, and the Center for Performing and Fine Arts. The Chief Academic Officer is responsible for curriculum and curriculum mapping, curriculum materials, student assessments, educational technology programs, School Counseling services, Special Education services, teacher evaluation of professional practice, professional development, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), school events and activities, the school year calendar, and more. The Chief Academic Officer has direct supervisory responsibility for the Academic Leadership Team, which includes an Elementary School Principal and Assistant Principal; Middle School Principal and Assistant Principal; High School Principal and Assistant Principal; University Scholars Program (USP) Principal; Center for Performing and Fine Arts (CPFA) Head Administrator; Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor of Special Education; Supervisor of School Counseling; Supervisor of Curriculum; and Director of Educational Technology.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Draftthe school year calendar, including schoolwide and division-level events, field trips, and activities, in coordination with the Academic Leadership Team and fellow Chiefs and Directors, for approval by the Board.
- In coordination with the Academic Leadership Team, review and revise the annual Student-Parent Handbook, which articulates policies, procedures, and expectations.
- Review and revise the annualGuidelines for Instructional Staff in coordination with the Academic Leadership Team.
- Develop and administer comprehensive budgets for Elementary, Middle, and High Schools, USP, CPFA, Special Education, School Counseling, and academic administration.
- Provide oversight for the curriculum, curriculum mapping, horizontal and vertical alignment, textbook materials and materials review cycles, assessments, differentiated instruction, and standards for online learning.
- Provide oversight for data collection and data analytics.
- Provide oversight for an ambitious, full-scale MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Support) program.
- Recruit and hire principals, teachers, specialists, and non-instructional academic staff.
- Provide oversight for an ongoing teacher and principal evaluation of professional practice, using a Charlotte Danielson model and the PA-ETEP tracking and accountability system.
- Spearhead new teacher training and professional development for all academic staff.
- Serve as a member of the schoolwide Technology Steering Committee.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Masters Degree in Educational Leadership, Ed.D preferred
- Administrative II certification preferred
- Strong knowledge of standards for online learning
- Strong knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and data analysis
- Strong financial acumen and facility with budgets
- Strong knowledge of Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) policies, procedures, and regulations
- Deep understanding of the charter school movement in Pennsylvania

Experiences
- Educational Leadership:
- Experience as a principal, director, or similar leadership role in an educational setting.
- Proven track record of improving student achievement and educational outcomes.
- Curriculum and Instruction:
- Extensive experience in designing, implementing, and evaluating curricula and instructional strategies.
- Familiarity with differentiated instruction, blended learning, and interventions aligned with MTSS or RTI frameworks.
- Data-Driven Decision-Making:
- Experience analyzing student performance data to identify trends, address gaps, and guide strategic decisions.
- Knowledge of assessment tools and processes.
- Professional Development:
- Experience planning and leading professional development for educators.
- Ability to mentor and develop leadership capacity in teachers and staff.
- Policy and Compliance:
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal education laws and compliance requirements (e.g., ESSA, IDEA, Act 55).
- Experience implementing policies related to special education, ELD, gifted education, and other student services.
- Budget Management:
- Experience managing academic budgets and resources to align with institutional goals.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Demonstrated ability to build partnerships with families, communities, and external stakeholders.
- Experience working collaboratively with diverse teams, including teachers, administrators, and board members.
- Education:
- A master's degree in education, educational leadership, or a related field (doctorate preferred).
- Certifications:
- Pennsylvania State certification in educational leadership or Superintendent Letter of Eligibility
- Knowledge:
- Deep understanding of instructional best practices, curriculum standards, and assessment methodologies.
- Familiarity with technology integration in education and cyber/hybrid learning models.
- Leadership Skills:
- Strategic thinking and long-term planning abilities.
- Strong interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills.
