Since our inception, whole child health equity has been a central tenant of Healthier Generation’s work with the recognition that poverty and educational disenfranchisement are key drivers of health and health equity. In addition, we understand that racial discrimination continues to be an explicit factor in the systemic distribution of resources that support whole child health equity. Armed with this knowledge, Healthier Generation is rapidly advancing an ambitious health equity vision anchored a measurable strategic framework, programs, and its organizational impact goals. The Opportunity Healthier Generation is seeking a Chief Health Equity Officer (CHEO) to ensure accountability in achieving the organization’s health equity vision. Together with the organization’s Board, CEO and executive team, you will have the opportunity to co-design and lead a data-informed health equity plan and strategy, including making resource recommendations to successfully implement the plan organization-wide. Reporting directly to the CEO, the ideal candidate will be an experienced and results-driven innovative leader with proven strategic planning, partnership/fundraising building, program leadership and operational skills. You will build, guide, and assess effective strategies, partnerships, programs, policies, and best practices that advance Healthier Generation’s health equity vision, externally and internally within the communities in which we serve. You will ensure the measurable health equity, as defined by a set of guiding JEDI principles and SMARTIE goals, are fully integrated into Healthier Generation’s program and partnership model, as well as its organizational brand messaging and culture. You will lead our health equity philanthropy efforts that align with our work and support specific development and business development goals of the CHEO. Responsibilities Health Equity Strategy and Planning (15%): Provide expertise to benefit organizational program strategy, tactics, communications, development, and business development efforts. Collaborate closely with all staff to further advance Healthier Generation’s strategic framework for whole child health equity focus – ensuring timely completion of established justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI)/Health Equity goals, measurable impact, and overall accountability: Serve as a member of the executive and senior leadership structure to drive organizational strategies and priorities (internal/external programmatic and funding), partner effectively with leaders from across the organization. Facilitate decision-making, collaboration, and problem solving with employees at all levels of the organization to accomplish shared goals. Partner with leadership to envision and execute regional strategies to foster relationships with key stakeholders and funders that drive Healthier Generation’s brand, reach, and impact. Advise Healthier Generation leadership, teams, and partners about strategy and delivery of evidence based equitable, diverse, inclusive, and just approaches in service of reducing and ultimately eliminating inequities in health. Lead the development of technology tools that enable just, equitable, diverse, inclusive, and effective initiative delivery, client engagement, and progress tracking. Contribute to long-range budgetary planning. Keep current and abreast of national, state, and local legislation, academic research, and other developments with impacts to health equity in child and family health, to inform approaches, opportunities, or directions. Drive a performance-based culture through accountability, coaching and mentoring of colleagues and providing regular feedback to foster leadership and strategic thinking. Health Equity Implementation (20%): Lead the implementation of Healthier Generation’s just, equitable, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) strategies while exemplifying Healthier Generation’s mission, vision, and core values. Identify, champion, and train senior leaders and staff on best practices in program management and delivery, including the creation and use of processes and tools to drive equity, inclusion, efficiency, alignment, and effective planning and implementation. Implement strategies to meet existing and future JEDI/Health Equity goals in partnership with organizational leaders. Internal DEI (15%): Articulate an evolving Health Equity/JEDI vision for Healthier Generation Manage and lead the development and execution of the DEI strategy and build internal equity and to define priorities, goals, and measures of success. Possess expertise in the field of whole child health equity/JEDI and demonstrate ability to lead and support an EDI strategy that influences every function across the organization. Facilitate decision-making, collaboration, and problem solving with employees at all levels of the organization to accomplish shared goals. Advise Healthier Generation leadership, teams, and partners about strategy and delivery of evidence based equitable, diverse, inclusive, and just approaches in service of reducing and ultimately eliminating inequities in health. Fundraising and Development (50%): Accountable for leading and collaborating on fundraising efforts towards an individual goal of securing $5 million or greater annually (through direct and indirect efforts). Serve in a leadership role in organization fundraising efforts through lead generation, proposal development, consultation on initiative vision/design, curating stakeholder success stories and results, and stewarding key partnerships and funder relationships. Specific goals will be set by the CEO annually and will serve as 50% of performance evaluation. Advise, manage, and support budget planning processes for existing and new health equity and EDI funding sources. Create and leverage prioritized partnerships, develop, and grow organizational philanthropic assets dedicated to health equity. Contribute to long-range budgetary planning. Provide reporting and analysis of regular and ad hoc initiative updates and outcomes to leadership, colleagues, and external parties. Expand prioritized relationships and partnerships with key national organizations and agencies. Partner with senior leaders to develop and implement a fundraising infrastructure to achieve the organizational goal of creating a culture of philanthropy. Represent Healthier Generation with donors and on external projects, meetings, and committees. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Expertise in the health equity/JEDI field is required. Centers justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice in all aspects of public health work. Excellent interpersonal skills to establish and maintain stellar working relationships with direct reports, colleagues, and external stakeholders. Ability to influence, motivate, and manage project teams and cross-functional teams. Proven ability to steward multiple funding relationships, secure grant funding, ongoing grant management and working with multiple budgets. Exceptional writing and communication skills with experience in developing and presenting reports to a variety of audiences. Demonstrated ability to develop and execute multiple complex projects and juggle competing deadlines. Proven ability to work with a high level of independence and prioritize assignments and departmental needs to meet deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively on an individual level, and in small and large groups, including delivery of presentations at conferences and to the Board of Directors. Ability to work effectively and respectfully with a variety of constituencies representing diverse cultural, racial, ethnic, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Other Requirements Required frequent travel by car or plane up to 25% of the time. Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in related field and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced Degree preferred. 15+ years of experience in strategic planning and/or project management Community based initiatives, education, public health, and/or youth focused program environment experience preferred. 10+ years’ experience with supervision and leading complex teams. Demonstrated experience infusing health equity/JEDI best practices into internal and external organizational operations. Proven experience of managing, coaching, and collaborating with high-performing project teams and/or workgroups. Preferred experience with or knowledge of managing both in-person and digital or virtual engagement strategies. The salary range for this role is between $144,000-$162,000.
