Through its bold initiatives, state of the art infrastructure, breadth of talent, and dynamic work environment, the Legal Department of Capital One has become one of the most highly admired corporate legal departments in the country.Based in McLean and Richmond, VA, CAST prides itself on providing its associates with an environment that fosters authenticity and a space for growth and development, and fostering a culture where each associate is respected and their individual contributions are valued. For this role, we will consider candidates based in Mclean, VA, Richmond, VA, or Chicago, ILThe RoleThe Manager, Counsel role will be primarily responsible for managing a variety of procurement contracts escalated to Legal from our Enterprise Supplier Management (ESM) team, as well as providing advice and counsel to ESM. The Counsel is a hybrid business counsel/transactions counsel role that will be responsible for the following: managing (including drafting and negotiating) procurement transactions that support Technology, Card, Retail and Commercial Bank, Auto Finance, Payment Network, Workplace Solutions, Brand, HR, Global Finance, and other lines of business and functional groupsidentifying legal issues and risks in procurement and outsourcing contracts and working with a variety of legal stakeholders to draft appropriate terms and conditionsunderstanding and advising on internal guidelines and proceduresbuilding and maintaining strong relationships with ESM and legal stakeholdersmanaging repeatable, controlled processes for transactional workwhen necessary, managing and coordinating outside counsel, including management of the delivery of services and costcreating reports, discussing trends/metrics with senior leaders in Legal and ESM, and creating and providing training on key issues and processes, as neededacting as a backup Legal representative as needed in procurement risk gate meetings, exercising great judgment in determining whether a transaction is in scope for Legal engagementdelegating/managing assignments to team of backup attorneys as needed The PersonThe successful candidate will be a legal professional with proven ability to operate effectively in a complex, highly regulated, and evolving environment. The candidate will have a demonstrated ability and willingness to work as a team player, interacting with associates across departments and job levels; the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision; strong organizational skills with impeccable attention to detail; excellent analytical, verbal and written communication skills; and the ability to work cooperatively with internal constituents to create efficient processes and to get issues resolved across organizational boundaries. Exceptional drafting and negotiation skills and the ability to identify, lead and manage a negotiation team as well as the ability to manage multiple transactions, take on new responsibilities and handle novel issues is critical.Basic QualificationsJuris Doctor from an accredited law schoolActive member in good standing of at least one state barAt least 2 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, government or an in-house legal department, or a combination, with a focus on third party procurement, vendor or outsourcing transactionsPreferred Qualifications3+ years of combined experience as an attorney in a law firm or in-house counsel legal department with a focus on third party procurement, vendor or outsourcing transactions2+ years of experience providing advice and counsel on complex procurement transactions 2+ years of experience in the financial services industryExperience identifying issues related to privacyThe ability to manage multiple transactions or matters, take on new responsibilities and handle novel issuesAbility to work in a dynamic environment and flexibility to adapt to changing needsAbility and desire to learn new areas of lawAbility and willingness to work as a team playerStrong communication and interpersonal skillsStrong analytical and organizational skillsExperience with Google WorkspaceAt this time, Capital One will not sponsor a new applicant for employment authorization for this position.This role is hybrid meaning associates 3 days per week in-person at one of our offices listed on this job posting. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.Chicago, IL: $144,000 - $164,400 for Manager, CounselMcLean, VA: $158,400 - $180,800 for Manager, CounselRichmond, VA: $144,000 - $164,400 for Manager, CounselCandidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI).
