Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Assistant Director of Student Affairs for the Paul Robeson Cultural Center. Reporting to the Director of the Paul Robeson Cultural Center, the Assistant Director will provide dynamic leadership in developing cultural programs and activities that serve the Rutgers community. This role focuses on assessing and meeting the evolving needs of our diverse student body by expanding existing resources and creating innovative initiatives that enhance cultural awareness and African American student development.Among the key duties of the position are the following: Partners with the Director to assess the needs of the African American student constituency at Rutgers. Facilitates intersectional advocacy in the areas of mental health, basic needs, sexual violence, spirituality, and career readiness.  Serves as advisor for PRCC-advised cultural student organizations, supporting students and student organizations through comprehensive programming, resources, and guidance. Oversees Student Organization grant program.  Develops and executes leadership development training, workshops, series and retreats facilitating cultural awareness and promoting aware of African-American culture and issues on campus.  Facilitate Faculty/Staff Learning Session around Black success and engagement for support of PRCC community. Coordinates programmatic initiatives on behalf of the Center including Rites of Passage, Black History Month, Black Welcome Week, Robeson Week, and Student Leadership recognition.  Supervise student staff including Building Managers and the Harambee Leadership Internship program. Assists in the oversight of general PRCC operations and day to day management. Coordinate PRCC Mentoring programs and initiatives. Serves on Assessment Committee on behalf of PRCC and leads center assessment initiative in collaboration with Center staff. Builds strategic partnerships between the center and university departments to develop resources, support university committee involvement, and student advocacy.  Applies student affairs theories and cultural competency to enhance community engagement and completes additional work consistent with the center’s mission and community need. Certifications/Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Work beyond the Master’s degree in higher education administration. Basic working knowledge and understanding of the realities of contemporary African American life and culture. Knowledge of administrative procedures, budgetary processes, and staff supervision. Basic working knowledge of academic, student life, enrollment management, financial aid, health and safety issues, personal counseling and disability issues at a large, multi-faceted research university. Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills, leadership, management and marketing skills, and computer skills. Strong ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations. Experience working with multicultural students on a range of issues that students might encounter as they navigate the college environment, including but not limited to financial aid, disability and safety issues, counseling, etc. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in student Affairs, Higher Education administration, or related field. Knowledge of various on and off campus resources as points of referrals for students. Cultural competency that reflects, at minimum, an understanding of the cultural needs/issues faced by diverse student communities. Ability to demonstrate student-centered approaches to their responsibilities. Understanding and knowledge of research findings, theories, and best practices in diversity education/counseling, as well as identity development, student development, and student learning theories. Advanced knowledge of student retention studies, academic achievement, student learning and development, collaborative learning and group work, career development, and campus climate issues. Expertise in higher education administration policies, and practices with particular emphasis on student service delivery, student leadership development, policy advocacy, and multicultural student development. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in establishing and implementing short- and long-term program goals and objectives; administering enrichment programs/projects; conducting seminars and workshops. Advanced experience and knowledge of personal and academic crisis intervention; and working with students to assist in clarification of ethics and values. Demonstrated experience in understanding of one’s culture, as well as one’s privileged and subordinated identities; must be able to articulate the advantages and challenges of a diverse society. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively across campus, at all levels. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a broad range of students, faculty, staff, senior administrators, and community leaders. Experience in mediating, managing, and resolving conflicts; facilitating group work; and training students and staff. Experience in building successful collaborative relationships across unit/dept. boundaries. Employs open and clear decision-making processes. Demonstrated skills in problem identification, sound judgment, transparent decision-making, critical thinking, and creative problem solving. Experience in managing and analyzing complex organizations. Experience in programmatic budget and resource management: understanding and managing financial, information technology, and space resources. Ability to work in complex, political situations. Demonstrated skills to effectively lead, motivate, and influence staff at all levels. Keen sense of organizational acumen: understanding of campus culture, processes, procedures, and how decisions are made. Demonstrated experience in training, and supervising students. Basic working knowledge of university anti-discrimination policies and practices, including formal and informal complaint and dispute resolution procedures, resources for dispute resolution, and work with campus administrators to address and resolve incidents of hate and bias (particularly those that directly involve communities of color). Grant writing and donor engagement skills are a plus. Position may be asked to present on behalf of the PRCC and Rutgers University at professional associations and conferences. Position is a thought leader and partner with the Director in advancing the field and work of the Center. Ability to think creatively, multitask, and work well independently. Ability to work well in an office that services a diverse population with varying levels of needs. Equipment Utilized Experience in administrative function, good communication skills, and Microsoft Office. Communication through social media, website design/maintenance; and tools for online information exchange (web calendars; reservations; file sharing tools; email distribution lists; etc.). Physical Demands and Work Environment Special Conditions Due to the nature of work of the Center and Student Affairs in general, this individual will be required to work some weeknights and weekends as needed.
