Senior Environmental Scientist

Overview UMIAQ Environmental is seeking a Senior Environmental Scientist to lead and perform advanced environmental consulting and engineering services. This role involves planning and conducting environmental site assessments, managing field operations, interpreting data, preparing technical reports, and ensuring compliance with state and federal environmental regulations. The position will also contribute to business development efforts, prepare proposals and budgets, and interact with clients, vendors, and team members at all levels. Work will require travel, including to remote locations, and both office and field-based responsibilities. Responsibilities Essential Functions will include:Provide comprehensive environmental consulting and/or engineering services, including planning, data assessment, reporting, and overseeing field personnel.Perform Phase I, II, and III Environmental Site Assessments.Define scopes of service, prepare budgets, and develop proposals.Review, evaluate, and interpret environmental data; prepare accurate and concise summary reports.Sample soil, groundwater, and other environmental media at contaminated sites in accordance with regulatory standards.Manage hazardous waste and hazardous materials in compliance with federal and state regulations.Apply environmental remediation technologies and support remediation projects.Prepare Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs).Perform and lead spill response activities, including in rural Alaska.Plan and coordinate logistics for remote field work, including travel arrangements and equipment needs.Support business development and marketing activities, including cost proposals and presentations to clients.Interact and communicate professionally with clients, vendors, and staff at all levels.Perform other duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:Knowledge of Alaska environmental regulations and federal regulations, including RCRA, CERCLA, and OSHA.Knowledge of environmental remediation technologies, hazardous waste, and hazardous materials management.Experience with statistical analyses.Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; advanced computer skills in Access, ArcGIS, AutoCAD, gINT, and MS Project preferred.Strong technical writing, organizational, and verbal communication skills.Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within a team.Ability to lead and mentor field teams in environmental projects.Strong critical thinking and analytical skills to assess data, solve problems, and make sound decisions.Ability to plan and manage logistics for fieldwork, including in remote or challenging environments.Personable, flexible, and professional demeanor with strong client relationship skills.Ability to meet physical demands of fieldwork, including lifting and carrying 30+ pounds and performing work in various weather conditions.Ability to travel frequently, including to remote locations, and work extended hours or weekends as project needs require. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Hydrology, Civil, Chemical or Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or another Natural Science.7–10 years of relevant experience.Meets the requirements of an Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) Qualified Environmental Professional per 18 AAC 75.333.Knowledge of Alaska environmental regulations and federal regulations, including RCRA, CERCLA, and OSHA.Experience in soil, groundwater, and environmental media sampling at contaminated sites.Experience with hazardous waste and hazardous materials management.Experience with environmental remediation technologies.Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.Valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record.40-hour HAZWOPER training.Strong technical writing, organizational, and communication skills for effective interaction with clients and staff at all levels.Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.Experience preparing SPCC Plans, SWPPPs, and leading spill response teams.Experience with planning, logistics, and fieldwork in remote locations.Employee must have a valid driver’s license and three (3) year clean driving record.All employees must pass Non-DOT pre-employment drug screening.Preferred Qualifications:Master’s degree in Geology, Hydrology, Civil, Chemical or Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or another Natural Science.Advanced computer skills in Access, ArcGIS, AutoCAD, gINT, and MS Project.Experience with statistical analyses.Experience on federal projects (e.g., HTRW, TERC, AFCEE).Physical and Mental Demands:Ability to lift and carry 30+ pounds.Frequent sitting, standing, walking, and bending during field and office activities.Manual dexterity to operate sampling equipment and handle materials.Adequate vision and hearing to safely perform job duties.Mental focus to follow detailed regulatory procedures, interpret complex data, and prepare accurate technical reports.Working Conditions:Work performed in both office and field environments, including remote and rural locations.Exposure to varying and extreme weather conditions.Work at sites that may involve contaminated soils, groundwater, moving mechanical equipment, and other environmental hazards.Travel locally and out of state, including to remote communities, often requiring extended hours, weekends, or irregular schedules.#LI-WW1
