HVAC CONTROLS SPECIALIST

Job SummaryThis position is responsible for daily operations of HVAC controls systems.Duties and ResponsibilitiesMonitor and control HVAC, Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) systems at applicable facilities.Maintain and upgrade electric, electronic, and DDC controls programs.Support Maintenance Department with troubleshooting HVAC, BAS, IAQ, and electrical systems.Inspect and recommend modification of HVAC, BAS, and IAQ systems for proper and efficient operation.Work closely with the Trades Foreman to validate work orders through BAS review.Proactively manage BAS systems to generate utility savings and develop energy conservation measures.Coordinate building system schedules and operation with annual district needs, such as, individual HVAC overrides, summer operation, special programs, weekend events, school rental requirements, etc.Respond to after-hours calls for troubleshooting.Provide design specifications and budget documents for replacement and new, retrofit, and replacement HVAC, BAS, and IAQ systems.Read and interpret blueprints, plans, specifications and drawings to determine job requirements.Attend and participate in meetings for planned projects.Evaluate projects, determine feasibility, scope of work, estimates material, and personnel requirements.Review plans and specifications for new, retrofit, and replacement HVAC, BAS, IAQ, and electrical systems.Schedule and inspect HVAC equipment and controls installed by contractors.Assist in monitoring new construction and projects.Maintain as-built control records for district-wide system operation.Attend training classes/obtain certifications as required by evolving technologies.Perform related work as required.Model the WJCC Strategic Plan Values: Individualism, Integrity, Innovation, Accountability and Collaboration.Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)Must have an extensive knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used to install, repair, and maintain HVAC controls systems and equipment.Must have a knowledge of energy management systems and how they control the output of HVAC systems.Must have a comprehensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.Must be able to prepare estimates and order materials for maintenance and repair jobs.Must be able to exercise independent judgment in determining operating conditions.Must be able to plan, lay out, supervise, and inspect the work of subordinates.Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and vendors.Must be able to read and interpret blueprints and schematics, use test instrumentation, and use hand and power tools.Must possess intermediate to advanced computer skills.High school diploma or GED required; Associates degree, advanced factory training, Journeyman or Master HVAC License preferred.Five or more years of experience with Trane Tracer/Summit, Siemens, Schneider Electric, and Delta controls is preferred.Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the State of Virginia.Must have a good driving record based upon the criteria of the Williamsburg-James City County School Division.Supervision ExercisedSupervises the work of HVAC technicians and the work of students, summer workers, and other personnel as assigned.Supervision ReceivedPerforms duties under the supervision of the Supervisor for Facilities and Capital Projects and the Trades Foreman.Working Conditions and Physical RequirementsFrequent deadlines, changing priorities, works in high areas and close quarters, works outside in inclement weather, must be familiar with building automation systems and computer programs. Often works alone. Ability to perform heavy manual labor and lift up to pounds. Ability to stand, stoop and bend for long period of time. Ability to work in various types of environmental conditions.
