Veterinary Surgery Technician

Hospital Hours: Monday - Friday 8a - 5:30p, Saturday's 8a - 12p, Closed Sunday's
Key Responsibilities Surgical Support & Anesthesia:
- Assist veterinarians in the preparation, induction, and maintenance of anesthesia during surgeries and procedures.
- Ensure that patients are intubated and placed on appropriate anesthesia protocols.
- Monitor patients throughout the surgery, including vital signs, oxygen levels, blood pressure, and anesthesia depth.
- Manage anesthesia recovery, ensuring patients safely regain consciousness and receive post-operative care.
- Administer and monitor analgesia and pain management protocols.
- Prepare and maintain surgical equipment, ensuring everything is sterile and ready for procedures.
Patient Care & Clinical Support:
- Assist with venipuncture, IV catheter placement, blood draws, and other essential diagnostic procedures.
- Monitor patients before, during, and after surgery to ensure their comfort and safety.
- Administer medications, fluids, and treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian.
- Provide detailed patient care notes and update medical records to ensure accurate tracking of patient progress.
Dental Procedures:
- Perform dental prophylaxis (cleaning, scaling, and polishing) with confidence and in a timely manner.
- Ensure proper anesthesia monitoring during dental procedures to ensure patient safety.
- Demonstrate expertise in dental radiology, including obtaining clear and diagnostic dental x-rays.
- Assist in the development and implementation of dental treatment plans and follow-up care.
Client Education & Communication:
- Educate pet owners on post-operative care, including wound care, medication administration, and signs of complications.
- Provide compassionate and informative updates to clients regarding their pet's surgery and recovery.
- Assist in client communication regarding treatment plans, expected outcomes, and follow-up care.
Inventory & Equipment Management:
- Oversee surgical inventory, ensuring all necessary supplies and equipment are in stock, organized, and ready for use.
- Maintain equipment cleanliness and functionality, adhering to safety protocols.
Operational Support & Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with the surgical and veterinary teams to ensure smooth workflow and optimal patient care.
- Assist with scheduling surgeries and managing cases to ensure efficiency and preparedness.
- Participate in team meetings to improve clinic practices, patient care, and overall workflow.
Adaptability & Flexibility:
- Although the primary role will be focused on surgery, there will be times when you will be scheduled to assist with treatments and help manage the flow of patients in the treatment area.
- Ability to move between surgery, treatments, and recovery areas as needed to ensure patient care is consistent and efficient.
- Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) or Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) is preferred, willing to consider someone with relevant work experience and ability to perform as a Surgery Assistant.
- At least 3-4 years of experience in surgical veterinary practice, with advanced knowledge in anesthesia, intubation, catheter placement, and surgical assistance.
- Experience with surgical instrument handling and maintaining sterile technique.
- Experience in emergency surgery care is a plus.
- Knowledge of veterinary practice management software (e.g., Avimark, Cornerstone, eVet) and diagnostic equipment is preferred.
- Previous experience in surgical team coordination and client communication is a plus.
- Expertise in veterinary surgical and anesthesia protocols, including safe induction, maintenance, and recovery.
- Strong proficiency in performing dental prophylaxis and radiology.
- Ability to provide excellent patient care, monitoring anesthesia, and performing dental procedures as needed.
- Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to educate clients on post-surgical care and answer questions compassionately.
- Ability to think critically and remain calm under pressure, particularly in emergency or high-stress situations.
- Strong team collaboration skills, with the ability to work closely with other veterinary professionals to provide the best possible care for our patients.
