Overview The corrections specialty in military law enforcement primarily involves guarding and supervising confined and restrained personnel. Law enforcement specialists that focus on corrections not only act as jailers, but are licensed military law enforcement specialists that ensure law and order. They prevent and quell riots and disturbances, prevent and suppress crimes against military personnel, and maintain order at military installations. Military Training All enlisted service members complete basic military training, which includes time spent in a classroom and in the field, and covers tactical and survival skills, physical training, military life and customs, and weapons training. Corrections specialists in the Military will gain skills through classroom study and on-the-job experience. Job-specific training content may include: Military/civil laws and jurisdictionInvestigation and evidence collection procedures and techniquesArrest and physical restraint techniquesSelf-defense and use of firearmsCrime scene processingInterpersonal communications skillsSearch/restraint and custody/control procedures Crime preventionTestimonial evidenceProtective servicesChild abuse preventionCrisis/hostage negotiations Helpful Attributes Ability to remain calm under pressure Interest in law enforcement and crime prevention Willingness to perform potentially dangerous work Good judgment Negotiating skills Related Civilian Careers Supervisors of Correctional Officers Supervisors of Police and Detectives Security Guards
